While riding on Sunday, I ended up on a dirt road and saw this right in the middle of the road. Somebody had a great meal.

Any idea what that tail came from?

Possibly a whitetail deer tail. They are brown when hanging down, but
white whenever the deer raises it. The droppings however, are not deer.
Probably a carnivore. I would guess that a coyote killed the deer or the deer was struck by a car and the coyote capitalized on it.

Yeah, I hadn't thought of larger animals like a deer, but could be. At first, I was thinking cat, but the hair wasn't right. I should have looked around for a carcass.

The scat seems like a smaller mammal, like a fox.

I just thought it was cool seeing the two together.

Should kept the tail.

Either hang it from your pocket like the "cool kid" in that link.

Or hang it from the back of your bike... as a caution to potential wheel suckers.

Second on the whitetail deer guess. I've seen a few coyote kills in Maine and hair left looks very similar to that.

Almost crashed head on on a MTB ride today. Definitely a white tail :)

Around here we call them rodents with hooves. Ever try to raise a garden or grow flowers in deer country?

Looks like the tail of a really weird turtle to me.

I have a recreation and resource management undergrad degree.

You get such over population of deer in a forest and 6 feet up from the ground will lack almost all vegetation and starve hundreds or thousands of ground dwelling animals.

Plus they ruin perfectly good cars. Well the fast ones anyway, not a prius though they bounce right off of the deer. ;)
