I use PermaPatch when I do this, and I buy the patch material. PermaPatch sets underwater, in the cold, in the heat, etc, much better than the garbage that tries to pass for pavement patch.

The town's public works department said it was okay but told me to be careful and not get hit by a car.

We've done the same on our race courses.

Funny, there were some potholes that we highlighted two weeks prior to events but finally decided not to patch as it was outside the race line..............county filled those in weeks later. :banana:

The DPW in the town happens to have a bike racer on its staff. Because they sweep the course (ahem "testing the sweepers" ahem) I totally forgive them for the pothole thing. Plus one year they patched a bunch of things after the first week of racing, after said racer noticed some stuff that needed fixing. I think that's the year I asked him about patching stuff on my own.

Disclaimer: my patch work is of much lower standard than what I'd expect from a town. Now I don't grumble when I roll over a bumpy patched area because I know how difficult it is to make a smooth patch.
