View Full Version : Bike Lust Poll?

Spicoli

I think I am not alone in this but, however much I enjoy what I am currently riding I find myself looking and lusting a new bike? As many if not most here have a Serotta in there stable, what else out there are you lusting after? I am curious to see what others are truly having dirty thoughts about. So lets here it whats on your list, I promise I wont tell your current bike a thing.

For me right now its, Peggs and maybe a Vanilla. Tomorrow who knows?

The next Sachs (road), Mariposa (with Campagnolo Paris-Roubaix changers), and Pegoretti ('cross Love#3). Soon, I hope. Incoming Goodrich, fillet-brazed, nearly finished. But other than that, still in the realm of lust rather than realization: J. P. Weigle and T. Kellogg top my list. Toei would be a huge, huge coup. Worth a trip to Japan. Also Nagasawa: if we ever see another road bike in the U.S. it will be nearly a miracle. Sacha is young and I hope to live long enough to have a Vanilla. And if I may be so bold: the next Tournesol.

I waffle between wanting a Kirk or a Legend, and sometimes thinking I should just stick to the one bike I have now. I've had to write off carbon frames because with my short legs, all of the head tubes are too long. Not complaining, as this makes life more simple.

it really depends where the jerk is on e-richie's list but the next one is probably going to be a dogma fp made in a petacchi-esque geometry-

think 54x58.5 with a 73'30minute seat angle and a 150mm stem.

that'd be tough.

and hopefully towards the beginning of summer I'll pull the trigger on a Kirk Terraplane.

So, I think there arent too many other bikes I lust after (that I dont own or will own soon)

I own:

Ottrott
Hors Categorie
CSI
Colnago C-50
NOS 1998 Trek Y-Foil (mint)
incoming Pegoretti Big Leg Emma
and eventually a Kirk Terraplane

What else is there?

the short list:

1) Sachs - direct instead of second hand. But I have a hard time standing in lines so this might be awhile...

2) Pegoretti - Luigino only, no AL or tig. Anybody know what he does with last year's show bikes?

3) Vanilla - lugged with horizontal top tube, leave the rest up to Sacha. Maybe in the next year??

If redturbo's Peg were this much --> <-- bigger I'd be writing a check. That's a gorgeous bicycle.

This got me thinking, since Petacchi will probably be on a C50 (or something like it) this year do you think the measurements will be as extreme as his Pinns? I would love to see a super stretch C50. His bikes sure do stick out in a crowd and I doubt anyone other than the man himself could ride those things when he is done with them, if anything was left of them.

they're not super stretched. he's 6'2 with monkey arms and only rides in the drops in a field sprint. the bike's contact points are not unconventional nor is the handling geometry. it's just a modern bike.

the jerk could ride it, and pretty much any long lanky bike racer with a tenth of petacchi's ability could too.

Not the traditional kind of lust for something new, but there is one bike that I keep looking for on ebay. Merckx Majestic. I made the mistake of not buying one even though they were on deep discount the last year they were made. Haven’t found one in the right size in over three years.

Most of the rest of my lust has been satisfied by steel Serottas and a Kestrel that climbs great but is soooo scary descending.

What I should say is the seat tube is mad short. You are right that his reach is not that out of whack, I think its more a case of TT in relation to ST that makes it look so long. Maybe he should try a downward facing toptube, you know reverse sloping (I'm kidding). It does seem he has the most drop of anyone I have ever seen. Definatly has that missile look to it.

It also seems like his Pinns have a fairly steep/upright headtube?

-I've ordered a Filet Brazed Fixie Terraplane frame from Dave Kirk for arrival early this spring.

you need to be as low as everyone else no matter how tall you are. look at pictures of merckx in the peloton. he was a lot taller than just about everyone else but he was just as low if not lower in the pack.

(don't laugh, the jerk has thought about reverse sloping, fortunatly seatposts started getting longer and fatter....)

You know that seems pretty obvious but I never even thought about it like that. The light bulb just went off above my head in regards to how high you may or may not be.
In regards to the head angle, would'nt that make the bike a bit twitchy at speed? I would think you would want that thing to be a rock with no wiggle to it what so ever? Good thing I dont know how to build a bike, cause I would SUK at it.

ok, noob question.. since i'm also 6'/6'1.. and have a 58/58.5 top tube.. but i have a 120mm stem...

anyway my question is.. does this mean petacchi could also be in a 58cm c-c/60cm c-t bike, which generally come with 58/58.5cm top tubes (like a serotta stock) with a 130mm stem? he'd sit a bit higher and his bike would be a bit heavier and less stiff i guess?

sd
In theory, yes he could but it would cause a few problems for him. One is it would put the front of his bikes about 6" higher (exagerating) than what they currently are. Think back to what I said about a reverse sloping TT. He could never get enough drop out of it. This is the reason his seatube is so short in relation to TT, to enable him to get a lower front end. The reach and balance aspect is simple, longer and lower = FASTER if you can tolerate the position and generate power while seated. Everyone can generate power while standing but think about it as trying to sprint on a mtb as opposed to a road position thats a bit longer and lower.
I see this with how Colnago actually treats it with there sizing. For example a 56 Nag has a 55 TT with I think a 54 ST and a 15 HT. While a 57 Nag has a 55 ST 56 TT and a 15.8 HT. Now if you put the same size stems on but the 56's a little higher, and the saddles at the same height you would only have a reach difference of .2mm. The big difference is that the 56 has the ability to have a lower front end. The reach is almost the same but the drop is not.
Commence arguing now but thats how my hack brain worked it out. My math may be off but the theory kinda comes accross, I think?

Mud

but!!!!, we each have one bike. Being a little lazy I would like to have two Serotta steel bikes made to the same dimensions as our Serottas. My wife's bike would have Centaur components and mine would have 105. The would be used primarily in the Slocum Computrainers.

Weather is good today in NJ and we will get out to ride which figures. Finally got the Computrainers set up and working but the Slocum makes it easy.

davids

Technically, my next bike will be my first Serotta (incoming!), but that's a done deal, so...

The next bike will almost certainly be a mountain bike. My Klein's getting a bit worn out, and I'm thinking that a quick XC bike with 4" front and back will do the trick. Santa Cruz? Specialized? We'll see, but the next bike won't be an Object of Lust as much as a Tool for Fun.

After that? The two that keep bobbing to the top of my mind are either Sachs or Vanilla. A Sachs - because it's the pinnacle of a long tradition, and completely refined in the best sense of the word. And eRichie makes me laugh. A Vanilla - because Sacha's work is the best kind of artistry, beauty in the service of function. His bikes have an esthetic completeness that's intensely satisfying.

In either case, I've got a year or two to decide, and then another year or two to wait!

And I could change my mind a couple of times in the meantime. IF's got a new steel model, the Crown Jewel Factory Lightweight, that's really intriguing... :D

fast bikes set up for fast riders. The right tool for the right occasion. see how petacchi is able to maintain a "flat back" thru-out the field sprint... compared to 35-yrs-old Zabel and Mc-Eworm.

It's small wonder why petacchi/cipo-and-the-likes often quit the tour before the mountain stages...not that they can't climb but their bikes are not set up properly to pedal across the mountain passes...

How abot' the Santa Barbara, Calif-based framebuilder Temple Cycles (http://www.templecycles.com/index.html)?

I am surprised...eh, actually, more like "offended" that it's not on top of anybody's lust list...

It’s a truly fine bike

Sach's would be nice--the wait is long, but maybe that would sweeten the (eventual) arrival.

Vanilla's are sweet, I want to hear more about RIDE QUALITY though. The bikes are obviously beautiful--now tell us about the ride.

Cross and Race bike from the guy with the long wait.....

Something drunk & curvy from the guy in Montana....

A carbon sunflower from Andy's brother and that yoga professor that hangs out here....

A Meivici and an Ottrott just because...

Yeah, that should set me up for awhile.....

Must get in on this thread because everyone else has, it seems.

Since the departure of my CSI, I have had many lust moments, thinking about when I'll take the plunge and buy a lifer.

Every bike in the poll is lustable. (I might also lust after a Litespeed, just because I went to the factory and saw how they build 'em. Really cool. No factory "seconds," though. Darn.)

But quite likely, gun to the head, I'd go for a Kirk, because, darn it, Mr. David's Terraplane stays are just so bloody sexy and different. And, of course, that also describes me.

Dave, I'm saving...

I would sign up for a Sachs....NOT just because
........it rides better than any other bikes on this planet..
........it has a nicer paintjob than Mona Lisa..
........it's worth a wait longer than the tail of sinatra..
........it costs more than my favorite juicemaker machine..
........it has a heritage almost as long as the days I spent on this earth..
........it has a productivity level of ONE which makes Adam Smith having to rewrite his thesis from the grave
........it has a high(er) resale value on eBay ;) ..

And last but not least....I CAN HAVE IT MY WAY

The 50th Anniversary Twizzler Sachs

Time, but not a new one, that'd be too easy...I'd like to get my hands on the bike Bettini used to ride Cooke into the barriers in the Giro...

Seven Axiom Steel
Litespeed Ultimate ('02, polished Ti)and Team Issue.
Serotta Legend Ti and Serotta Aluminum
Q-Roo Borrego
Griffen Classic B4C

Airborne Zepp
NUTS, you may say? Guilty as charged, your Honor. Jeff N.

I seem to do a good job taking care of my Serotta habit, probably because the wait isn't too long. but what i really desire is to add another Sachs (track or road model), Dario's Luigino built for me, J. P. Weigle (maybe touring model), Vanilla (stainless lugged creation), and another Tom Kellogg Spectrum (single speed) is pretty high on the list.
i promised myself that i'd quit my Ebay addiction if i could ever score a stainless Rigi in my size. there is one on Ebay right now but in CrOMo with paint but it's too big for me :(
this list is good for today only because i'm sure that tomorrow i'll think of a few others.
