It seems like almost every stage we have "The Big One" - kind of like the super speedway / restrictor plate races in NASCAR
We've kicked around solutions over and over
Probably not much will change until several big names get taken out of the event completely or (god forbid) someone gets killed

I prefer this kind of take down. (http://www.cyclingfans.com/node/8487)
I'm not sure why they forget how to ride in July. They seem to do better the rest of the year.

The question, I think, is not why they crashed but why didn't we see MORE crashes?
With the distance they are doing, at the rate they are riding, almost every day for three weeks, when the stakes are super high, this is after all the frickin' tour de france, and they are humans, albeit super-humans, I would expect to see operator errors. The fact we aren't is a testament to the riders abilities, skills, organization of this race and quite a bit of luck.

They need to mix in some bigger hills on these stages much like stage 2 & 3. Flat stages lead to large groups which increase the risk of crashes, for the reasons stated above. Flat stages are quite boring too until the end...just like restrictor plate racing.
