Am moving across the United States, and we have two tandems and a dozen other bikes for the rest of the family. They would take a rather large amount of space in a moving truck with the rest of the furniture...

Space is tight, and it's not a corporate-funded relocation, so I am curious if anyone has found other cost-effective methods for shipping/moving lots of bikes. UPS, Amtrak, storage pods, etc?

Wish there was time for a cross-country drive in the Campy wagon:

A buddy recently moved here to MA from CA with about 7 or 8 bikes. He had each one packed into a bike box as if shipping it, and stacked them in the moving truck. Not ideal and a PITA for tandems, but I don't really see any better options.

ABF Freight. You pay per foot of storage in a semi trailer. Load it up yourself, they drive it. It's pretty reasonable and easy. I used them when I moved from AZ to MN. Use bike boxes (free from LBS) to pack the normal bikes and get some thrift store blankets for protecting the tandems.
