View Full Version : Anyone know if 7-speed cassette + spacers would work with Dura Ace 9000 hubs?

Does anyone know if a Shimano 7-speed cassette would work with a Dura Ace 9000 hub? Specifically, the 9000 hub will take a 10-speed cassette with a supplied spacer (1.85mm). A 10 speed hub will take a 7-speed cassette with an appropriate spacer (4.5mm). So would a 9000 hub take a 7-speed cassette with the two spacers stacked?

The above probably seems pretty weird to want to do, but I scored some wheels with 9000 hubs and want to ride them with 7-speed until Shimano Ultegra 6800 comes out later this year.

Thanks. I got the information my OP from Sheldon, but it doesn't have info about using 7 speed on the new 9000 hub.

As long as the cogs are 'hyperglide', sure it'll work..just space it first, like you said.

If it's Hyperglide, you can surely make it work. Also, you are awesome.

Make sure your low set screw is in perfect adjustment, I think you will have quite the gap for a chain to fall in and rip some spokes. The 2 spacers you should need are the 11 speed to 10, and the 8/9/10 to 7. Good luck!

Thanks, everyone! I'll update the thread after wheels come in and I get the relevant parts.

For anyone who might care to file this info away, I can now verify that one can indeed put a 7-speed cassette on a Dura Ace 9000 hub successfully, although the spacer situation worked out differently than expected. I initially stacked the 4.5mm spacer to go from 7 speed up to 8/9 speed spacing + the 1.85mm spacer to go from 8/9 speed spacing to 11 speed spacing. Even with the cassette rivets down in the recessed cutouts on the spacer, this was too much for the cassette lock ring to reach its threads. Luckily, using just the 4.5mm spacer with a bit of standoff provided by the cassette rivets provided the exact amount of spacing for it to work.
