$70 for two cups and saucers is sort of steep.

http://www.rapha.cc/rapha-cappuccino-cup-set/?cm_mmc=email-_-050613-_-img-_-cappuccinoset

But, to be fair, it was designed in collaboration with "Intelligentsia barristas." Sounds like an oxymoron to me but....

I agree that it is a bit steep, but Intelligentsia is one of the best roasters in the country and their shops have truly top-notch baristas (and coffee as a consequence).

You can get the exact same set, minus the Rapha stripe and the quote from Hennie Kuiper, for almost 50% less ($36 vs. $70), if you buy them from notNeutral:

http://www.notneutral.com/index.php/dine/lino-cappuccino-cups-set.html

But the cappuccino no doubt tastes more epic in the Rapha cup.

They mean Silver Lake, where the 2nd "hippest" Intelligentsia in Los Angeles is located. Venice would be no. 1.

However, the SL Intelligentsia often collaborates with a Rapha-approved bike shop which doesn't sell many bikes, Golden Saddle.

http://vimeo.com/42578262

My favorite Intelligentsia is in Pasadena. It was the only location with a full service kitchen, but tourists aren't generally inclined to pay $17 for a salad. Anyhoo, it's still the best post-ride Intelligentsia since they have a beer/wine bar.

How much are those cups again?

Lots of things out there that are expensive, lots of bike frames also, which many scratch their heads when they see the $....lots of bike and other 'stuff' that does nuthin' but give you coffee shop points on that 20 mile Sunday morning ride with the 'fellas'.

Like Rapha or not, they are incredibly successful in branding, marketing, getting their message across. They sell everything they make and are often out of stock on things like these cups.

Like Apple stores, they have it wired.

http://www.rapha.cc/riders-diary

-Dear Rapha Training Diary,
I went way over budget when I spent $110 for 226 pieces of paper held together by some cast off leather from some cows ass area but I'm worth it. I mean it's worth 50 cents a page to write things like today's entry:
"SATURDAY- This morning I suited up in $950 in poseur bike clothing and coasted two miles downhill to the coffee shop. I got a double espresso. I HATE the taste, YUCKY! but I wanted to make sure that if some guys from the bike shop next door saw me I was drinking the right "cyclist" thing. It made my tummy, I mean, gut, hurt though so I called my wife and had her pick me up so I could go home and sit on the toilet while reading Velo News. Just in case anyone saw me loading up my bike in the minivan I quickly sliced both of my tubular tires so the bike shop guys would think that I had no choice but to get picked up. A few guys from the bike shop did happen to see me so I waved to the guys as I was getting into the minivan and yelled "I needed to call the team car, somedays you just ride harder that your equipment can take!" My wife told me to shut the eff up and get in the van. Overall a epic ride day."

"Sure, everyone makes everything by hand these days. But we hand make the things that we use to hand make things. Before choosing a pair of our leather gloves, potential buyers are screened and brought out to the test track where they choose a cow with a hide color that will go best with their double-stitched Corinthian toptube cyclocross handle/Pabst holder. They’re then given two hours to ride with their cow and get to know one another, before the heifer is slaughtered and made into 3 pairs of gloves and some burgers."

Nothing wrong with this kinda stuff. If the object appeals to the buyer then that is all the matters, right?

As ruled by the US Supreme Court, the freedom in spending of money is equivalent to the freedom of speech. There is every right to sublimate class warfare as a rant on Rapha pricing as there is the right to purchase any number of cappuccino sets desired. Except one of these rights is exercised quietly, without seeking solace and support from the hoi polloi.

Thank you Rapha, for changing the topic. :) Long live Campy, and let us hope one day a bloated Russell Crowe confronts Rapha in the arena, giving it some Proximo, "I did not pay good money for your company, I paid it so I could profit from your deaths! Mostly joking. More often than not the guys I see out riding in Rapha are taking it easy or on something other than a low slung race bike that day.

That was at least partially a potshot at myself. When I first got back into road cycling I didn't quite have my legs back in order enough to relive past abilities. Truth be told the slimmer you are the less you get called on being a poseur regardless of actual ability.
