View Full Version : Nice, Simple, Small CO2 inflator?

I just picked up my first "compact" frame and realized it's going to be much harder to find a place to strap on my old Silca Impero frame pump. I'm not a fan of the little mini pumps so I was thinking about buying a CO2 inflator. What's a good, really simple, small, thread on inflator? I had a little Genuine Inovarions Elite (the spring one) a while back and didn't like it at all. I run big tires so having the on/off function is probably moot. Anyone still make a thread on, straight, presta only inflator?

Planet Bike Red Zeppelin CO2 Inflator

best i've used. too simple to break. too simple to mess up, and waste a cartridge .

Thanks for the suggestion but I'm not interested in mini pumps. If I want a pump I'll find a way to velcro a Silca under the top tube. I'm really looking for something that fits inside an incredibly small seat pack.

I have an old Genuine Innovations screw on type that I've been using with success for years. It is tiny but they don't seem to make it anymore. You should look around and see if you can find an NOS one. Otherwise Lezyne has some cool choices:

I actually like that one. How does it fit on the valve? I'm a little suspect of the "all things to all people" presta/schrader heads. I've never had great luck with one.

I have the original GI Air Chuck, the green fluted one. Works just fine. I think it was replaced with the Air Chuck Elite.

I carry this Silca inflator (http://www.excelsports.com/main.asp?page=8&description=CO2+Regulator+Eolo+Aluminum+81.5&vendorCode=SILCA&major=12&minor=1) in my tool roll.

I have one of the GI inflators that I don't use since buying a Lezeyne mini-pump. You're welcome to have it if you would want it. Shoot me a PM with your mailing address and I'll send it your way.

Heh...Good to see you here, Porter. I'm really starting to be interested in the dial valves, as opposed to the spring loaded ones.

Thanks a lot for the kind offer. I think I might try either the Zepplin or the Silca listed above. While I like the idea of super simple, having the option of putting a bit of air into the tire and checking the bead set also appeals to me. The dial inflators seem to be a good compromise.

Planet bike one is presta only. At least the one i have.
Thread onto the valve and turn red valve to open and close. Super easy to use and fail safe ahha
Never wasted a co2 cartridge since buying this.

This one is nicely built & the thumbwheel allows you to control the inflation. Every time this comes out of the tool bag, owners of other inflators rave about how nice this is...

Threaded co2 cartridges are expensive. So I cheap out and buy the thread less ones from Walmart in the gun section. That means I need to carry one of the inflators where the cartridge goes in a container and the inflation nozzle screws in to the top (puncturing the co2 as it screws on). I carry two cartridges and a mini pump since there have been times I didn't seat the inflator and lost all the co2. Pilot error. If you don't have any experience burn a few cartridges in your garage at home for practice instead if learning the hard way on the road. Also once the co2 froze the valve stem and it tore off the tube. Hence I also carry a spare tube. Sounds like a lot but it all fits in a small fizik clip on seat bag

I have the PDW shiny object and it malfunctioned on me when I needed it. I would have been stranded but some another club member had a regular pump to save the ride. I think the O-ring inside had become stuck in place because it was a long time between uses. The company was willing to send me a new one but I was able to take everything apart and re-lube the internals and it is now working again

I have a local gas distributer called leland gas that sells the 12gram threaded carts quite cheaply. I would try to avoid the prepackaged and overpriced carts from the inflation companies. Search threaded soda chargers in the volume you want.

I have this one. It works. Also has a dial where you can control the amount of air flow.

^ Yeah, I have a similar one, Labeled Serfas Mikrobo. Presta only, wheel to control co2 flow. I usually carry a minipump these days, but the times I've had to use it, it has functioned perfectly. I like that it screw tightens onto the Presta valve (grey cap). One fewer thing to hold onto while filling your tube.

Here is the exact same thing labeled Barbieri Mikrobo, I guess the Mikrobo label is the important one to search for. And bulk threaded co2 cartridges can be found easily enough.
