Drove ~ 19 miles to the Stage 7 TOC Livermore startline to shoot some pics.

Fortunate to live ~4 miles from the base of Mt Diablo so drove back home, hopped on my mt bike, enjoyed my backpack picnic while watching the peloton "turn themselves inside out" just below the Diablo northgate junction ~4.6 miles from the summit finish.

Enjoy!

Wonderful shots! Did you use special photog equipment or just ordinary POS digital camera [by POS I mean "point and shoot" not "piece of shi$]!!

I know the guys dressed as the bear and the devil. Great to see some former Ohio guys living it up in California!

Thanks for the kind words on the pics!

Not really a "pocket point and shoot" but a 4 yr old DSLR Canon 40D
with a Tamron 18-270 compact zoom which I use as a point and shoot since I have it on auto all the time.
Most of the pics were also shot from only 1-4 yards away.

Great, versatile, value lens- at last years final TdF, was ~ 50 yards from the road, on an elevated perch in the Jardin de Tulleries and was able to capture fair quality shots of the peloton rolling at their 25-30 mph clip:

Small world- those two guys were definitely having a good time that day and amusing the crowds.

They were pretty respectful of the riders unlike some clowns I saw on the TV coverage running dangerously close to the riders and sticking cameras and iphones in their faces.

Learned last year that descending off road to get off the mountain was much more enjoyable than dealing with the traffic jam of roadies (both experienced and inexperienced  ) on the tarmac.

This is an iphone shot of the Diablo summit in the background- at this point, I was ~ 6 miles from the summit- Koenig had already won the stage and the rest of the peloton were finishing up.

Glad to share the experience w/the appreciative folks here!

Note on Jens pic- This was shot with less than 10 minutes before the stated race start time. He was his gracious and affable self providing photo ops, autographs until he finally apologized and decline further requests telling folks, "Sorry gotta go now, gotta go..."

Gotta love him! :)
