View Full Version : OT: Preserving/Keeping Vintage Historic Newspapers?

As you might have guessed, this is Vintage Weekend at my household. Actually, all of my activity posting vintage NOS parts over in the classifieds was spurred by (1) moving to a new home about 5 months ago, and (2) the annual Colossal Clutter Cleanout that our entire town (of just over 1,000 population) engages in the Saturday after Mother's Day every year. We had amazing turnout yesterday for the general garage sale, and moved a lot of stuff along to others, as I am trying to do in the classifieds with the bike stuff that didn't belong on the porch yesterday (although we did sell several bikes and bike items off the porch yesterday).

Anyway, a question for anyone with insight. I have a fairly extensive collection of vintage historic newspapers. Complete newspapers, mostly major dailies, published on most of the major days in history from the 40's, 50's and 60's. Some of this - very little, actually - is directly of my doing. Most is due to my father and grandfather. The family's interest in history runs deep.

So, I know what to do with the nearly complete collection of original Look Magazine issues - they are properly perserved. But the newspapers have sat undisturbed for a couple of decades minimally under preservation. They aren't in horrible condition, but aren't minty, either!

Any suggestions? Are they even worth keeping in this day and age? If so, how do I properly preserve at this point? Any good resources on this out there?

Thanks!

Here is a small sampling filling the table.

PM if you want to talk specifics. I'm a big comic book and original comic art collecting nerd.

A lot of the mechanics are the same -- collecting what was once intended to be a temporary serial publication on cheap paper stock.

If you want to do the minimum, a decent art portfolio with mylar sleeved pages and acid-free backing boards would do wonders. Keep that in a cool, dark place and you should keep the silverfish at bay. Any art store can get you squared away pretty easily.

If you want to display anything framed, UV glass is a must, as is the same acid-free mounting materials.

Good luck. Its cool stuff.

My birthday is coming up kind of soon. Think of how great some of those would look on the wall of your favorite US historian! Just think of it!
