about 10 miles north and luckily the smoke wasn't bad at all. Buddy Charles test rode a Giant Anthem 29er and it was a big thumb down. Got in 2.5 hours on the Firefly. Decent day on the trails.

75 miles, southwest of Chicago, group of 10. Actual hills out that way. TSS of 531!

So far this year my rides have been solo, not hilly, and nothing over 50mi.

Cold, windy solo century...a bit cold for May. Rode past what looked like a dead coral snake, which was odd. Several live squirrels that freaked me out, thinking they might run into my spokes.

Had to take a picture of this road sign, considering it was May the 4th...

Let's try this...screenshot capture direct from garmin and posting using my android-enabled touch pad...

Nothing much to report except great weather, great ride, had to stop to help a couple on a tandem who broke their chain in the middle f our ride. Also my longest ride to date at 63miles.

We are having great weather in Seattle, 75-85! Did a flat 30 with the wife and another couple and heading out today to do a fast 60 with the boys today with 2500' of gain. sure is fun to be on the serotta instead of the commuter.

I rode the five boroughs of New York City, during which I:

Repaired 2 punctures
Adjusted 1 seat
Trued 1 wheel
Replaced 1 pedal
Tightened a set of brakes
Replaced 1 innertube

I also:

Lusted over a Eddie Merckx MXL and a Colnago Master.

Meant to catch up with BBD but my cell phone let me down.

Was very impressed with many peoples determination as sometimes I forget that for a lot of people 40+ miles is a significant distance.

Today was a good day.

Pretty flat ride today: 74 mi from Crofton, MD to Chesapeake and back. 3850+ ft gain, moderate head/crosswind. Pleasant day, though a little unusually and unexpectedly brisk in the am. Confusing day for deciding how to dress. Rode the SLC01.

Life (work) forced me down to 1 or 2 rides per week since early March, got out for a steady 3 hrs, 58 miles, 73 deg. and light wind. Perfect day to start rebuilding the base.

Couldn't believe how gunshy I was after Tuesday, every time a motor started to accelerate near me I braced for the impact, hopefully that won't last too long.

Went up to Williamsburg, Va with a buddy and rode all over the peninsula. Beautiful country, and flat, just like I like it.

You missed out on the lovely weather in Charlotte...cold/windy/rainy. I'm jealous!

I took my "new" Ravello breakaway type bike for it's maiden ride. 5 miles in it started to rain, and my rear tire was down to about 10psi. I stuck a 12g cartridge of co2 into it, which lasted about 5 minutes...rode home that way, 5-10psi. Oh well.

I rode the Napa Valley Tour de Cure today. It was a great ride.
One of many highlights was encountering two other Serottas on the course. I even got a picture with one of the riders.
I'm on the right, with my CIII. My new friend (whose name I didn't get :( ) was on his sweet Atlanta.

Saturday - Austin-Shiner charity ride on Saturday - a full century on 500 miles of training this year. Not a good idea, especially hanging at the front with Bob Roll's peloton for a while.

Sunday - a day of rest and healling with the family at my son's confirmation.

12 hours of single speed racing in Ohio - http://www.calvinschallenge.com/

The race director summed up the weather at 10.5 hours in a tweet - "...wind has caused many racers to lose the will to live."

After a record-setting 14-inch snowfall on Thursday:eek:, the roads finally started to clear off by late Saturday. Got in a quick 24-mile solo Saturday evening, followed by a beautiful 54-mile solo on Sunday afternoon.

It's a semi working mine! He works it most of the year. Also people use it as a jump off point for backcountry skiing in the Indian Peaks in the winter.

I use it to realize how out of shape I am...

ive been meaning to vent about my saturday experience, and this seems to be a good place to do it.

So my riding partner happens to be my wife.
We ride every weekend together, we go to Spin classes together every monday, and she lets me obsess within reason about bikes.

We have been on one Metric Century together last year in Napa. It was hard but we both made it and were pretty pleased.

Since then we've both lost a bunch of weight (me 35, her 25 pounds) and i would have to say become a step more healthy...

2 months ago my wife tells me there is a Century ride a few hours away scheduled, and it is touted as "the flatest Century ride in America"... we signed up thinking it would be well within our abilities...while the Metric Century we did is obviously less in miles, that ride had about 4000 feet climb (if im remembering correctly), while this one had a paltry 600.

Easy enough, right? WRONG:
Apparently we wern't aware that an insane WIND front was coming in...after 20 miles in we were facing 30+ mph headwinds.

it was like riding into a wind tunnel, with a parachute on.

it was the most brutal wind i have ever felt in my life, and for some reason the whole time it was smacking us either from the front or the side, BUT NEVER at our backs. it was torturous.

45 miles in, after 25 miles of slowly chugging thru brutal winds, my wife literally in tears from exhaustion, we figure we are 10 miles away from the start and call it quits. i think we went a total of 55 miles.

the metric century in napa was tough for me, and brutal for the wife. i think it would have been easier for us if we understood bonking and carb consumption a little better.

anywho we had figured we would have triumphantly conquered our first Century ride, even if its the flatest one to be found, but alas we must wallow in our defeat.

im just hoping it dosn't discourage the wife from going on any other 100K's or Centuries down the line.

Illdthedj: Lots of experience riding w/my wife. You sound like you are well on the way to a good relationship with each other and your bikes. You guys just have to put this one in the "laugh about it later" locker. You have to accept that you were hit with exceptionally bad circumstances, realize that many others were in your situation, and it's not indicative of your overall abilities. It's as if it had rained torrentially or snowed. Would you feel discouraged if you pulled the plug early? It's not "defeat"; it's tactically-appropriate response.

Yes, you need to work on eating/drinking/bonking...but this was an unusual situation, and not the standard. Keep riding, developing your fitness and responses over longer and longer trips and, soon, you will feel ready to go again. If your wife seems discouraged, go easy for a bit...but don't let this define your biking. Some day, you WILL laugh about it.

Wind is the invisible hill, don't take it to heart. Cycling in windy conditions is soul destroying. At least with hills you can look back and see what you achieved and normally have a descent to make some sort of recovery.

You and the wife have had the worst of days and next time it will be much, much better.
