I have an old tandem with 27" wheels and I want to cushy up the ride a little. Bigger tires at lower pressure would be a simple fix, except I haven't found any 27" tires bigger than 1-1/4" (32-630). If I could go 40-630 or so, that'd make a significant difference, and save me rebuilding the wheels into 700Cs.

Somebody here must know of some larger 27" tires? Thanks in advance for any tip. . .

Kenda makes several 1 3/8" tires:

Also Club Roost and Sunlite:

They may make some other tread designs.

If you're patient, you might find something nicer by searching old bike shops and keeping an eye on ebay. Avocet and Specialized both sold nice folding racing tires in 27", but I don't know about wide ones. Set up an ebay search in Cycling/tubes and tires for "27 1 3/8 -tube -tubes" and "27 1 1/2 -8 -tube -tubes" and have them email you when something new is listed. I'm not sure anyone made 27 x 1 1/2", but it seems likely.

AFAIK the widest old-time 27" tire was the Specialized Expedition, 27 x 1 3/8". It was a great tire for tandems, but I don't think any have been available for at least the past 25 - 30 years.

Added to my watch list, thank you. Still like to do better than that if I can, though.

I also don't remember anything bigger than 1-3/8 width from years past. (And we scoffed at how grossly obese that was, in my teens. . . 19mm, now that's a tire!) 27" being even more of a fossil size now than back then, there's no reason the explosion of sizes in 700C should have tricked down. But, ya gotta hope.

I may yet wind up swapping rims. I've got rims I could use, only -- spokes are killin' me these days. $75 for the last batch, to go in my fair-weather wheels for this season. And that was a good price!

Vinayakan became famous as a dancer. His own troupe used to perform in various stages across Kerala. Thampi Kannanthanam was impressed with his dancing skills and gave him a small role in his film Manthrikam. Vinayakan imitated Michael Jackson in this movie and became popular among Malayalam audiences.

Exactly the alternative I'm looking at if I can't find fat 27s. Plenty of room in the brakes, but buying just a pair of tires is cheaper, and this isn't a bike I want to pour money into.

1 3/8" is roughly 35mm. I think you'll need to convert to 700C. That will open up a lot of doors for you.
