View Full Version : Stiff, Sleek, Silver, 140mm quill stem please

Hi,
I am a threadless guy who likes the look of quill stems.

I am going to try a bike with a 1" threaded and would like suggestions on a nice, stiff, attractive silver quill stem (73 degree, 140mm)

Cinelli,
3TTT?

Especially valuable are opinions of those who have used the 140mm versions, as things can get exponentially noodly at extreme lengths.
anything particular to avoid or any to look for?

thanks

Look at steel options.

My 130mm salsa quill feels every bit as stiff as a threadless setup.

Seems cheap enough:

I'm using 130 forged alloy stems on my Gianni Motta and don't really notice it being that noodly. Then again it's my city bike and I'm not exactly sprinting for lights on it.

Have this (http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c151/TaiLee77/c5735d06c0e6d45faec453205e6dce61_zps582de952.jpg)c oming in next week. That's a 140mm panto'ed Cinelli stem and handlebar that I'll probably be looking to part out. I've already got a 130mm stem inbound.

Cinelli A1's and Grammo's both great stems.

I'm using a 3T Record 84 in 130 mm on my Motta (http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c151/TaiLee77/2012-08-31091310.jpg)...my Nitto Noodle's tend to slip in the clamp a bit on big bumps despite the clamp being tightened down.

Cinelli XA - made in 135, not sure about 140

Cinelli 1A

Cinelli Grammo Ti

Control Tech - tigged aluminum

Ibis Ti

Litespeed Ti - not sure about the angle, catalog says "0 degree rise". I assume that means 90 degrees quill to extension (which to me means rise, but maybe they mean level with a 73 degree HTA) May have been available in different angles in model years other than my source.

Ritchey Force Comp - -10 degrees

Ritchey Comp Lite - again unsure of the angle

Sycros Altura - tigged aluminum

ITM Eclypse - tigged steel - I know they made 130, not sure about 140

Serotta Ti - ? another maybe

I can't imagine anything stiffer than a Syncros. Even at 140 mm, the extension must be as stiff as the quill. The Eclypse should be pretty close, just not sure if it was made in 140 mm.

I've got a Nitto (not sure but I think it's a Pearl) in 140mm in basically new condition. I bought it to experiment with a longer stem and decided 130mm was the right length on that particular bike. One ride and back in the box. PM me with an offer if interested.

I have a Salsa 140 that has been repainted in a silver "hammerlock" finish (looks like a Sears craftsman steel toolbox) with an SRP titanium stem bolt. PM me if interested

I have a 3TTT 140 in the box. Used for a short time and then put it away. I don't remember it being noodly at all.

I have never used any quill stem over a lifetime of cycling other than a Cinelli alloy stem. Only the 1A and 1R. There is no other quill stem that can match the look of those Cinellis.

Can't speak to if they are noodlely or not in the 130mm & 140mm lengths, which are the lengths I have used. I have never seen photographic proof of a broken one that wasn't from a crash. Yes they look spindly compared to the jumbo hollow tube of a modern threadless stem but I look at it as a solid block of aluminium that is 2/3s the thickness of a Nouvo Record crank arm.

The reissue of the 1A for 26.0 bars was listed as offered up to size 140mm but I have never seen it available from any vendor. If anyone knows a source for or how to obtain the 140mm I'd like to know.

Public apology to Reggie...my buddy ended up not being able to meet up with me at a conference in Salem tomorrow because he just got back from Sea Otter and is a bit behind at his shop. He was going to bring me the bike which had the stem/bars. No objections from me if Reggie needs to get his gear from someone else. I probably won't have bike in hand for another couple of weeks.

May be few 140s will pop out of the woodwork now the this thread has outed a few fans of 140mm quill stems.

Cinelli quill stems are measured along the top from binder bolt center to clamp center. A 140 only measures out to 130 in the modern threadless methodology.

Sorry I can't help out Reg (can I call you Reg? ;)) on this as I don't have another 140 as I used it on my Bruce Gordon. I did however buy the 140 offered up by Salsa_Lover, merci mon ami.

if he paid you, he can have it.

he doesn't think he did anything wrong, and in truth of fact he didn't commit any crime.

and I am only offended because I want it, and the only "high ground" I can take is the moral high ground and be pissed over his etiquette faux pas

or perhaps I am trying to match his perceived "rudeness" in sniping my stem, with my own rude indignity over what is a trivial matter in the real world.

It probably is doubly inappropriate for me to shame him into giving me the stem instead.

If he HAS NOT sent you the paypal, then give me your email and I will pay you, in fact i will pay you more than your verbal agreement with him.

Well I am feeling now involved on this dispute... and don't want to be in that place.

fuzzalow made a deal with me, paid and the stem is packed and I am ready to go to the post office and send it. I have to honour this deal, and I will.

If he agrees to transfer the sale to Reggie, I will also gladly do, no need to pay more or overbid him. you can have it for the same amount.

I will ship it in 1 hour time.

fuzzalow
04-25-2013, 10:00 AM
I haven't shipped it yet, so you both may arrange this gentlemanly ;)

In my own defense, this thread started as an inquiry into 140 quills. Not specific to Cinelli 1As. And I added to the thread that I wanted to purchase a Cinelli 1A reissue in 140 if anyone knew of a vendor of the 140. Meaning I was a buyer of 140 1As and only Cinelli 1As. 1/2 hour later after my post Salsa_Lover posts an open offer which I bid on. I thought his reply was to my post because I posted earlier exactly what I was looking for - which he had.

I feel bad because I would not snipe another Paceliner. I regret the circumstances. If Reg had made clear he was targeting a Cinelli 1A, I would have stayed clear.

I have that same Record 84...beautiful stem...if only my Nitto bar didn't slip in it...not sure why it would either since 3ttt's standard was 25.8 and the Nitto is 26.0. Just bought a 3ttt Evol 2002 in 130mm...hopefully that won't slip.

I'll take some of the heat for the situation...I promised Reggie I would meet up with him as early as yesterday after I got back from my conference, where my friend was supposed to meet me with the Merckx that has the stem on it. At this point, I don't have a definite timeframe, but he says he has a friend who comes up to Seattle about once a month that he could potentially send the bike up with.

Reggie...if you find something beforehand let me know. Otherwise I'll check back in with you when I finally get the parts in hand and it will be the same sweet deal I quoted you before...but I may have to insist upon seeing the Peggy.

Not to rub the salt in the would...but I found another pic of the stem on my iPad.

it's not your fault,
I got testy because I have a limited time frame and was already overwhelmed with the variety of "non-compatible" options I was facing involving 26 or 26.4 quills - 25.4, 26 of 26.4 bars, modern campy brifters on Cinelli 64s, two different colors of "silver", and some other nonsense.

Several members have PM'd me with things that could work, or might work for me...

I am going to wait and check out your bars and stem whenever they show up.

In the interim I am going to get some new Nitto 176 bars (I love the shape, it compares somewhat closely to my pro vibe round bars I like), and a Nitto Pearl in the "12" length (as "13" is pretty hard to find, maybe doesn;t exist).

My calculations say the bar has 1.1cm more reach than my pro vibe, but the stem should have 12mm less length than my 140mm , and that pretty much lines up (I hope.)
I hope to have parts collected and bike assembled mid next week.

^ One would think the 177 seems hokey for a *real* roadbike, but I'm gonna say its an uber excellent deep drop that works well with the flat ramp hood position. Its flair at the drops, and the bend at the tops are moderate, so there is almost no aesthetic penalty. If I'm not mistaken, most Nitto come with fairly long reach, which may allow a 1cm shorter stem.
