View Full Version : Salsa (Warbird Ti) as a main dish???

On the coat tails of the recent "Gravel Grinder" thread, my curiosity is piqued. My roadie is an Orbea Orca and I've also got a Poprad. My thought is to sell both and put that towards a Salsa Warbird Ti. Any thoughts about having that as a one & only? I don't really have any interest in racing, anymore...not that I really did that much in the first place. We do the occasional club/team ride, but really, most of my riding is solo, commuting, or with one or two others...and in the end, only for fitness and mental health. Gravel rides or longer-distance rides wouldn't be out of the question. I'm sensing that I'm probably over-thinking it and answering my own question, but I'd like some thoughts from any who have ridden a Ti Warbird and how they liked it. Thanks!

I looked at one, but the Hakkalugi Disc interested me more because of the ability to mount fenders. Plus the larger fork crown should make for a better steering bike.

I understand it is supposed to be a race bike, but why they didn't put fender mounts on it is beyond me. Also the edge fork that comes with it doesn't have them either. If you are making a bike for dirt roads mud is a given at some point. I was seriously considering this bike either in the Ti or Al. I ride dirt roads probably 90% of the time. But in the end I decided to stay with my orbea cross bike for dirt roads.

Same deal as you guys.

Loved the way it rode, but I wanted more versatility.

I decided to buy a used Salsa all-arounder.

Chose a used La Cruz that was very reasonably priced.

So far, my oldest son and I are sharing it.

The bike is a hoot. :)

I like.

I also considered a redline conquest disc frame. I ended up with a full suspension 29 mountain bike.

Well if it were me I'd keep the Poprad and the Orca and get the Warbird too...
You can't have too many bikes, right?

An orbea occam 29. I should hopefully get it all built up this week. I figure I have the full range now, from a fully rigid ss, to a full suspension bike. :)

Cool.

What did you get?

Grady...Apparently your son slipped some Shimano on your Salsa while you weren't looking...I think it's time for a grounding!

Still on for WI on Saturday?

that La Cruz is the ****e! Love those bikes! My quest is to find one those and the wine color La Raza... I love Salsa (own two right now), but I'm not crazy about their direction right now...

That crazy kid!

Here's my public declaration, the bike runs like a top loaded to the gills with Shimano.

It's simply a fantastic ride for the $$$$.

Actually, so is my Fargo!

Love those Salsas.

Yep, still planning on driving down with friends.

If the weather goes super crappy, they'll do the Mammoth nearby in St. Croix Falls instead. I'm tethered to them for rides this weekend.

Either way, we'll be riding in lots of mud. The weather forecasts shows 2-3 inches of rain for the DR area tomorrow into Friday with 6-12 inches of new snow on top of that Friday into Saturday.

Cold, wet and muddy. :)

I am deeply in love with this bike.

Who'd a thunk it, as I am a Campy guy in general.

Que? Hakkalugi Disc comes with fender mounts? I can't see them in any pictures - please tell me I missed them.

I'd be using those adapter things, but I think there's still a chainstay bridge (which Salsa explicitly says they axed).

On the site though, it says this:

http://www.ibiscycles.com/bikes/hakkalugi_disc/#details

We've built in generous tire clearance. A 38C with good sized knobs will fit, and still have a lot of wiggle room for mud, out of true wheels, and fenders. And that's just on the rear. The front ENVE composite fork has even more room.

Perfect World...defintely! Unfortunately, the wife is a little too attentive to try to pull that fast one.

RE: The Fender Mounts - I've never run fenders, so that's not a huge detractor for me. Do they not fit because of tire clearances or is it just that there are no mounts?

RE: The Tapered Fork - If I'm not mistaken, the Salsa and the 'Lugi (Sweet set-up, BTW) run the same, tapered Enve fork, no? If so, is it that the headtube, itself, is tapered that makes a difference?

Thanks!

I would love to check out the Warbird. I am in love with my Chili con Crosso
The correct number of bikes to have is always N+1 or D-1 of course with N= however many you have and D= amount that inspires a divorce. :bike:

Plenty of room but no ready mounts....creativity required.

Same fork....Enve makes one disc cross fork - it is tapered. Dunno why tapering is special.

I vote go for Warbird. It is rad among rad choices.

What about the Kona Rove Ti? Looks similar to the Warbird...

Salsa really dropped the ball on the Warbird and Colossal (disc brake road bike) by not putting fender eyelets on them. Absolute deal-breaker for me. I can't for the life of me understand why they wouldn't. It even describes the Warbird as perfect for "wet weather traning" on the Salsa website. Whaaa?
