To the Campagnolo cognoscenti: We know that Super Record, Record and Chorus share the same internals with only cosmetic differences (and probably the ti fastener here and there). Would the same hold true for Athena?

I am likely to soon convert my Pacenti to 11-speed by simply buying a set of levers with cables and getting an 11-speed cassette. Poor man's 11-speed it would seem.

Is there any reason to go with Chorus? The Athena has a cooler carbon weave anyway IMHO. Or I can go with aluminum, which might be cool too. And might even shift better, like the old Chorus 10-speed aluminum shifters do/did.

Comes down to PowerShift vs. Ultrashift.

If you can't live without ye olde gear ratchet dump, the choice is simple.

2009/10 Athena was Ultrashift, same guts as SR/Record/Chorus

2011 Athena is Powershift..one higher cog at a time. I personally think Athena(2013) is just fine on my Waterford Demo..I haven't won or lost a sprint for a long time. One higher cog at a time is no big deal to me.

Cool. Thanks. That's normally how I shift anyway. There are some times I shift two at a time but very rarely more than that and 99% of the time it's 1 at a time.

Good info. Thanks.

The '09-'10 Athena had carbon covering an aluminum lever, IIRC. Look just a little plastic/cheesy in the flesh compared to Chorus/Record/SR.

Regarding PowerShift---since I'm accustomed to traditional Campy shifting (drop multiple cogs at once), it was an adjustment to use a Campy shaped ergo that shifted like Shimano. Not something I put up with for too long, but obviously, YMMV.

Can you do that w/o replacing the RD?

Ideally you do a little metal work on the bolt holding the RD cable ('Dave' has posted it here in the past) to modify the pull slightly.

Pics of the mod...

Modded bolt/plate on left in initial pics, stock bolt/plate on right.

Would the same hold true for Athena? I took apart a set of Chorus and Athena levers not long ago so I could transfer the alloy levers/blades - I wanted alloy Ultrashift.

The rear Ergo internals appeared identical to me. The front Ergo internals were different.

The Athena levers had to be ultrashift from '09-'10. Otherwise they are entirely different.

Athena levers from '09-'10 would have the same internals as Chorus and higher levels on both levers.

Just so people aren't hunting for 09 product, Athena 11 didn't hit the scene until 2010.

There was definitely a difference on the front (Powershift) side but the rear shifter internals looked the same to my eyes and disassembly was identical to the Chorus.

The brake and finger levers are the same, but none of the "internals" are similar at all. The two models function quite differently.

See pages 43 and 44 of the linked PDF.

If anything Athena, Veloce and Centaur are the same. The carbon levers are the same as Centaur, cosmetic carbon over aluminum.

http://www.campagnolo.com/repository/documenti/en/2012_COMPONENTS_SPARES-PART_A-03-12.pdfIt was over a year ago that I took them apart and my memory said that they were identical. I would have even bet money on it. However, after looking at the PDF I took the Athena one apart and it's not the same as the Chorus....so I stand corrected.
