what's an EVO? So many companies use the name but I've never figured out why.

That would be "Evolved" or "Evolution."

Anyone care to go double or nothing on the assertion that it stems back to the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo rally cars .... and their popularization with teens of a certain age through car racing games (cough Gran Turismo) in their youth. That certain age would now make them nearing 40 and occupying product manager positions in bike companies.

I believe the name goes back to the early 80's and Group A / Group B rallying. Homologation rules required manufacturers to produce and sell a small number of street versions of their race car. The "Evo" moniker helped distinguish them from the toothless production model. BTW, I drive an old Mitsubishi Evo, and I don't play videogames. :)
