Recently I decided to go retro and go back from 10 spd with brifters to 7 spd with downtube. This is an 1983 frame so its kind of a semi restoration thing. Anyway, the 7 spd chain rubs the Ultegra 6603 more than I can adjust out or tolerate. Are the 7 spd FD wider such that the chain won't rub or would it rub also. If 7spd FD were/are wider whats currently available that is a decent build? What was a good triple FD from the 80's? I guess at worse I could buy some 10 spd spacers and use a 10 spd chain.

Thanks, John

I imagine you need a FD for 6, 7, or 8 speed.

I haven't tried them on triples, but I'd think something like a Suntour Sprint or Cyclone would work. The ones in the pic aren't in the nicest shape, but will run forever. Sprint above, Cyclone Mk II below. Otherwise how about something like an early XT, M735 or so?

My Riv Allrounder has 6503 cranks w/52-42-30 and 11-34 7speed Shimano cogs and it shifts fine with Ultegra 9 speed front derailer and Suntour Power Ratchet barends. The chainstays are 45.5cm so that might help the shifting.

Take your pick. As I recall.....7 speed chain and 8 speed chain same width. So look over these 8 speed triple FD's.
