So, I'm putting ultegra on my incoming Kirk (which will be white).

I'm going with Ultegra (in the dark grey finish). I am trying to figure out wheels, I'm thinking of going with HED Belgium rims (which are black) and silver alloy white industry hubs and silver spokes.

I know the wheels won't really match the rest of the group, but I think it will look better than black hubs and black spokes with the white frame.

What say you?

I'd prefer pictures of your answers so I can see the effect you think works best :)

I really wish they made the second tier groups (chorus and ultegra) in a silver finish.

since you are doing custom wheels, I think I read here the pacenti comes in silver??

that would be my pick for a wide rim

Yes, that will look absolutely fine. Silver hubs, silver spokes, silver brass nipples looks good with everything.

I did silver spokes and black rims but I matched my spoke nipples to the hubs in blue, but I think the silver and silver would look good as well.

i thought ultegra did come in silver?http://www.totalcycling.com/images/large/20726_172035.jpg

re: wheels, i personally like all black because the spokes/nipples tend to just disappear against most backgrounds unless you're looking for them. having said that, i have a set that have black dt rims with silver spokes/nipples. they look fine

That dark grey Ultegra is really dark so some silver would look good with the white frame. Truth be told, either would look good.

FWIW, my Bedford is going to be white with black panels and the silver Ultegra group. I was torn about bar/stem/post colors more than wheels.

If you find a used set of Zipp 101s, they used to come in that grey that I like much better than the current black.

I'm partial to silver hubs, and usually like silver spokes too, but went black spokes for this Hed C2 clincher build. I think it works well. I had these on my LeMond I had repainted white with blue panels (and have since sold), but I'm still looking to find a pic of that bike with these wheels on it.

Btw, the Heds are available (http://forums.thepaceline.net/showthread.php?t=124817):) (Nice set of A23s on silver Ultegra hubs, black spokes and silver nipples in the same classified post as well.)

How do you define "second tier?" Would you really notice a difference between Chorus and say Athena? I bet you really wouldn't, at least while riding.

If you don't notice a difference, an Athena group is available in ALL SILVER - shifters, brakes, crank/bb, and ders. About the only thing missing is a nice silver Campy hubset....sigh!:cool::butt::confused:

I hear you -- lucky to have found a set each of lightly used Chorus silver and Record silver hubs right here on the PL. Good people here! :)

+1 for the H PLus Son Archetype rims. The black rim with white lettering is a nice little highlight to compliment the white frame. White spokes are an even nicer touch, though somewhat cost prohibitive from what I have seen.

HED C2 and Pacenti SL23 are also top notch choices, all 3 rim options will perform admirably I am sure.

Not sure if you are open to Campy but the Centaur 10s drivetrain used to come in a century grey finish. Very sharp IMO.

Hit me up if you would be interested in a silver King R 45 wheelset with silver A23 rims and silver Cx-ray spokes.

I would like to disregard all of your wishes, and spec your Kirk properly.

If you want an "old school" feel you will want silver headset, Athena 11 alloy group, and the used Nemesis wheels with record hubs and silver spokes on the classifieds. Maybe hold out for the guy who has Nemesis rims and silver chorus hubs on classifieds and get him to sell rather than trade.

If you want a new school feel, black sotto voce CK headset, Chorus 11 carbon, same wheels.

Either choice is so much more proper than Shimano. You would never know Athena is a "second tier" groupset, especially coming from Shimano where you wont notice the different between ultrashift and powershift.

My white Bedford has the HED Belgiums with silver White Industries hubs, black CXRay spokes, and silver nipples. I think they look great! (See my sig below)

Only a slight leap from there to neon rims and tyres!

Silver hubs and spokes with black rims is about the most universal wheel out there. I think it looks good with just about everything.

Appreciate all the comments. The headset is going to be a red Chris King.... and I think I'm going to use dura-ace skewers/QR levers.

I like the silver hubs, silver spokes and silver nipples. I even like h+son archetypes.... though I've had an irrational desire for the hed belgiums since they came out as the c2 rim.
