Offer your tips, personal stories, epic anecdotes or just vent.

I've had two bikes stolen. First, a custom track bike which I rode to a birthday celebration about half a mile from my place. Locked it under a camera with a cable lock. The night it was stolen the local police department had a DUI checkpoint about a block away and some drivers were being pulled over in the parking lot where my bike was locked up. Also, a beater locked (u-lock) in my back yard to a steel railing. $400 bike which I didn't keep in my garage for some reason. My neighbor had recently removed a large tree which made the bike visible from our alley. The thief cut the railing and left with bike and lock.

Haven't had any road bikes taken but after reading about the Parlee stolen in the Bay Area and the Super Six in Silver Lake LA, I dont think I'll ever leave any bike out of my sight for more than 15 seconds. Regardless of the neighborhood or location. Obvious intellectually, but not in practice.

Finally, this thread was inspired by seeing the following bike locked up to a bike rack which was not visible from the street or the establishment where the owner spent an hour or two enjoying happy hour. I mean, who locks up a 7 grand commuter?

For Bay Area folks, I started this Google group (https://groups.google.com/group/stolen-bicycles-bay-area/) that has tons of resources and tips on the intro page.
