View Full Version : ARO Ottrott & Meivici
How well do the down tubes of the Ottrott and Meivici stand up to gravel and stones coming up off the front wheel?
Durable, or vulnerable?

I'd say it's not a concern.

I have 75,000 miles on my Ottrott, and stone chips are not a problem. Of course, I don't ride on gravel roads.

I put helicopter tape on the front of the downtube, on every bike. Cheap peace of mind.

Does helicopter tape come off cleanly? I need to lay something down on the d/t and c/s of my EP.

. . . sells frame protection tape--forget the brand name. I've got some on my Legend and it works great. Bought what I needed from a buddy after he got a roll for his bikes. I think it's about $40 per large roll.

But then you've got a bike with sticky plastic sheeting all over it--kind of like those living rooms where the furniture is wearing plastic covers. I'd rather ride a bike with a few nicks or dings in the paint than draped in plastic. YMMV.

3m Expel film works well and comes off easily. Soapy water install. You can cut a strip that is not visible from the top/sides to avoid the 'plastic chesterfield' look. Oh.. and it's not a sticky mess. I use it along the top of my chainstay and at headtube rub points, too. Hard to see it's there.

I have an '07 Meivici and an '03 Ottrott.
They've held up pretty well against chips and dings, and I do ride the occassional dirt road with them (more the Ottrott than the Meivici).
