I have a feeling we are going to be seeing this an awful lot this year and forward.

Even in the sprints . . . look at the results. Greipel 11th and the Manx Missile way down in 16th!

That was a good show definitely. I go hot and cold with Sagan, but Sunday and today, you have to give credit to him, he animates the race and lets his legs do the talking.

We'll see how he does with the rest of the big one day classics.

Eddy didn't become the Cannibal till his palmares over the years fully justified the moniker.

Was it cfox who said it? His performances are incredible.

Its too early in the season yet for the pure sprinters. I'd be thoroughly impressed if during the grand tours, Sagan is able to hold a candle to Cav during sprint finishes.

Good to see that Boonen can ride. Hope his knee is better for Sunday. I want all-out war between him, Spartacus and the Terminator.

Terminator will work for now.
He's approaching EM's stature, in that he seems to be able to win in a break, in a bunch sprint, or even solo, if that were called for. Now all he needs is a fistfull of grand tour wins, throw in an hour worlds record, and a couple winters of dominating six-day races, and then we can start making comparisments.
But like I said (days before he popped his cherry with his first classics win), the kid has time.
Meanwhile, he's looking good for a repeat in the green jersey come July, even spotting Cav a couple bunch sprints; he'll rack up the points in uphill finishes and intermediate sprints while the other contenders are back in the grupetto.

Missed it this morning but watched the final 4k here (http://www.steephill.tv/players/youtube3/?title=Last+4+Km+of+Stage+1+(HD)&dashboard=driedaagse-de-panne&id=VZuIwv_e1pw&yr=2013) (Dutch) courtesy of Steephill.tv

Nice win, by the thinnest of margins. Sagan is definitely fun to watch.

Anyone know who is coaching/mentoring him?

I like the guy. Its nice to see some more personality in the peleton. So many of them make it look too much like a job for my liking.

Its insulting to our Lord God Eddy Merckx to compare Sagan to him.

There was a time when we thought Evgeni Berzin or VDB were the next big things too.

The kid has a nice kick and can go uphill a little, but let's not even start that conversation until he wins every jersey in a single Tour.

He is young and with the team at his disposal, he is climbing more this year too.. so who knows what will happen in the big tours with him from now on, they have a tour guy but clearly the #2 is sagan because darn basso clearly is not going in the upper part of his performance curve no more since last year.

But when he lost weight during chemo, his body composition changed and his watts per kg went off the charts.

he makes races exciting with his presence.

every race he enters he is trying to win, and he has a legitimate shot 85% of the time.

I never see him giving up or dogging it.

He pops wheelies and does burn outs in victory lane.

He is only 23!

I am more impressed today with Oscar Gatto.

No long sleeves.

No long pants.

No ear warmers.

Hard, hard man.

Not this load of bollocks again. Hasn't this been debunked enough already?

TimTim, I think your sarcasm detector needs a touch of EPO, a couple units of blood, a cortisone shot, and a testosterone patch on its balls! ;)

He definitely blocked Demare in the final meters, but the road was curving and he was in a full tilt heads down sprint. Too close to call this time, but if it becomes a habit, it's going to catch up to him.

Agree, let's wait until he wins a grand tour, just one, before we say he's another, 'new Eddy Merckx'.

Nice kid, hope he's clean.

No comparison at all at present with his young career. Time will tell.

However, he got his "Terminator" nickname not from road cycling, but from destroying mountainbikes due to his power output on MTB. So I don't think having the nickname implies he is equal of Merckx.

gavingould

at least give the kid a few years and see if he pans out before comparing to Merckx... he's got a lot of weapons at his disposal (bike handling, raw power) but seeing if he can get tactics and positioning down will be the true test over the next couple seasons. he is fun to watch.

I'm fine with calling him the Terminator. Or the Tourminator. Or whatever name the press decides for this week.

But there's only one Cannibal.

He's got a lot to prove be compared to Merckx - dominate the one day classics and minor stage races, some grand tours (at least two in a season), time trials, winning on mountain stages and on long, lone breakaways. He did impress at the ToC last year, but I want to see him do it consistently and in bigger races before I elevate him to Merckx status. That said, he probably has more potential than anyone that comes to mind.
