The more I learn about Tom Ritchey and the more I use his stuff the more impressed I am with him as a person, and his business. I am interested in a Ritchey Road Logic down the road... anyone have any of his recent or vintage stuff to post?

Those are both beautiful. Is Tom himself making any bikes anymore? Are the customs made by Tom or is everything made overseas?

Thwart, is that the same Road Classic that David Hallerman now has, or did it not sell and you are still desperately trying to get rid of it?

AFAIK, Dave owns the bike now.

Unless he's bound and gagged somewhere you'd think he would post a pic of its current build.

Or... he is a big-time college hoops fan.

I owned that bike for awhile! I sold it to another gentlemen who rode it around Austin for a bit and took it with him to China when he moved back to take care of his aging parents. It was a bit too small for me, but the guy I sold it to said that it was the best bike he had ever owned.

Weisan, are you back in Austin???

This is one that I owned for a bit. However, a steel Peg was calling my name and took its place.

This year model was my first real bike. I look for this bike on ebay almost every day, but in a 52cm. I has to be out the somewhere. They had the deepest nicest cobalt blue paint job. Thanks for posting guys!

Thanks all. I just turned 30 and thought I deserved something nice. I can tell you that I prefer the ride of this bike over my Cervelo R3 that I bought a couple of years ago(worked for a shop that sold Cervelo. Got a smokin' deal).

The Logic soaks up bumps and cracks in the road like you expect a nice steel frame to do and I'm riding on 700x23's. I can't wait to throw some 25's on it. The R3 is definitely a stiffer bike that I feel I can corner harder, but it beat me up a little after nearly every ride. The Ritchey does not do that. I've only taken a few rides on the Logic but it leaves me feeling fresher and ready to ride more miles.

I have not weighed the bike but my R3 comes in around 16lbs. The Logic doesn't feel much heavier than that and it rides just as fast as the R3 ever has. If you have the means I highly recommend picking a Logic up.

Great build Mayday.

My Logic frameset arrived Wednesday. The color is really great in person isn't it! I am piecing together my build over the next few months and plan on building it up in late summer. I currently ride a Specialized Allez and I hope your comments about the comfort ring true as well. TBH I have never felt too beat up on the Allez, but I know steel will suck up the road buzz better.

I fell in love with the frame and knew I just had to have it. It looks like a keeper bike, a frame that will grow with you and you will be proud to have 20 years from now and remember back on all the fun rides you've been on. I don't know if the carbon frames of today will do that. I know that sounds a little retro grouch-ish but I am not much older than Mayday at 34 (and full disclosure haven't owned a CF bike yet). I think it says something about the reemergence of steel that a couple of relatively young guys are interested in forgoing the newest tech for something a little more classic.

I plan on building it up with a SRAM Red/Force mix and either some Mavic Cosmic Carbones (which I own) or Reynolds Assaults (on order). I love the juxtaposition of skinny tubes and deep rims. Ritchey stem and handlebars, a Deda Superzero seatpost and Specialized Romin saddle and King stainless cages. My build should come in around 18lbs. Lastly, to make it more my own, I plan on getting the post and maybe the stem custom painted to match the frame.

I will post a build pic once it's finished.

FYI, my 55cm frame weighs 1789g and the uncut fork came in at 371g.

Here is a mock build pic with some old parts I had laying around (none of which will end up on the bike).

Agilis: my t-shirt says Haleiwa. It's a Hurley tee I picked up on Oahu a couple years back.

Dallez: make sure you check drive side inner chainring clearance. I'm running a 7900 bb with a 7800 crank 53/39 and the clearance was so tight with the inner ring and chainstay that the chainring bolts scraped paint off on my first ride as they flexed. I had to put a bb spacer in to solve the issue. Now I have a paint touch up after having the bike less than two weeks. At least I'll always know which one is mine. Also find a front derailleur clamp that has room to move the mounting bolt up and down. If you run standard rings you will have to mount the derailleur clamp right up under the bottle cage bolt.

Dallez

Thanks for the tips!

I plan on running a 50/34 compact crank. Hopefully I won't have the chain stay issue.

I also planned on buying a NOS Dura Ace 28.6 clamp on FD. Do you think since I will be running a compact crank I shouldn't have any cage boss conflicts?

I've been on it twice for a total of 50 miles. It rides great, but I feel like I don't have enough experience to say why it's better or worse than x. I came from my aluminum framed Specialized Allez, although I haven't ridden them back to back yet so I can't make a great comparison. Unforuntately, I had a 2 month lay off between the last time I rode the Allez and my first ride on the Logic. They were similarly spec'd and weighed about the same so I feel like they are more alike than different performance wise based on my two rides thus far. I will say it's feels very sure footed and solid and it rides very comfortably. I haven't ridden any chip and seal yet so I don't know if it handles that type of road chatter better. I will say that I am really enjoying my SRAM drivetrain. It's not as buttery smooth as my previous Shimano, but I am getting to like the more mechanical, positive feel to the rear shifting. The front shifting is better and I really love the fact that brake levers are separate from the shifter levers, they feel much more positive and purposeful. On that note, with all the hub bub about poor braking with Carbon wheels, I have to say that my Renyolds carbon wheels + SRAM Force brakes + SRAM Red levers feel as as good as my alu rimmed Mavic Cosmic Carbones and Shimano 105 levers and Tektro brakes. I don't notice any loss of braking power.

As far as tires go, I believe I read the Ritchey Logic frames can take up to a 28mm tire, but I've only used these 23mm Pro4s thus far. I might try out the 25s next time.

Although I said earlier that this bike is more similar than different than my previous bike, it automatically holds a higher place in my heart because this bike was bought as a frameset and each component was bought individually to meet my vision of the perfect bike for me and my budget. This bike speaks to me on an aesthetic level and pride of ownership level that my first bike never will.

braking...do you have hills in Dallas? I think braking with carbon rims is more of an issue on long steep descents...also wet conditions can be an issue.

I had a logic for 10 years and loved the bike. rode a couple of centuries and used it mostly in the early spring every year. I had the matching steel fork and considered swapping out the fork for carbon for many years. the bike had some flex but I didn't think it was an issue. it climbed well but I felt the weight was more of an issue for the hills in the san francisco bay area. the handling was good but for me, my serotta and rock lobster just felt better on fast descents.

I only sold it when I got a break-away.
