GdL was the last Monument I learned about. What's the deal with it?

Not that any of the Monuments are 'easy', but GdL seems to be the odd one out. The 4 other races all happen in the spring, GdL happens in the fall, toward the tail end of the season. It recently got got moved to make room for a race on the WorldTour calendar in China, a slap in the face and a gesture of disrespect.

Also, through its history GdL has been won overwhelmingly by Italians... (which I guess is similar to RvV and LBL as sort of home field advantage).

Anyone have any perspective on GdL? As anything more than an italian afterthought on a greying season.

Maybe because is so late in the season only the italians that got mature after the world will do it? This race is always after the worlds and many guys pick is for the worlds or the TdF so when the GdL comes up the guys are just too tired to even try it.

The other deal with the race is that started like +100 years ago, a classic.
