A beautiful "warm" early spring day for a ride around central RI. A little of everything...a little shakin', little bakin'!:)

I was hoping for a Cheech and Chong movie, where after you get baked your bike starts appearing in strange places (like on top of the church steeple), or with giant fuzzy animal mascots.

Maybe bakin' means something different out East?

I just got back from stringing together all the legal trails in the Arnold Arboretum...my cross bike sure looks muddier than yours. Great day to play hookie.

I was about to take some pictures when I realized I forgot my phone.

I was surprised the trails were as dry as they were but I'll take it.:) If you don't have pictures it didn't happen.;););)

Stupid dumb question. I think you said earlier that you used to race, Are you now down to one bike, and if so, how come you picked a cross bike.

Stupid dumb question. I think you said earlier that you used to race, Are you now down to one bike, and if so, how come you picked a cross bike.

Not a dumb question at all. Yes, I used to race a lot of road and crits and I'm essentially now down to three bikes: 29er for hardcore trails, SS for fun, and my cross bike. When Mike fabricated my cross bike I fully intended to race it but I also knew I was going to spend some time on the road with it so he built it accordingly. What I ended up with was a cross bike that handled just as good on the road as any race machine I had previously. I sold my Serotta (mainly due to a fitter gaff) because the Zanc just fit so much better. Life got in the way and I ended up not racing cross (I'm an all in or nothing type) but I found that I really liked exploring the dirt/gravel roads around here. Now most of my rides involve both and most of the time I don't really feel the need for a dedicated road bike. I have no problem hanging with my roadie friends, and frankly they have a problem hanging with me when I put the hammer down. I actually think I annoy them a little bit when I show up on a "cross" bike with light knobby tires.:D

The point to my rambling is that I see no downside to my set up, and it opens up my riding possibilities immensely. That said I have considered adding a dedicated road bike to my stable again and I've talked to a builder recently, but it's not a pressing need. Maybe.:)

William

PS: Btw, on the "Shake and Bake" title....

Shake = bouncing around on the trails/gravel roads

Bake = heating it up (going fast) on pavement in the warm sun.

Thanks!

I am pretty much down to three bikes also. Two steel road bikes..one lugged with steel fork and one tig with carbon fork. I got a ti cross bike last fall but have not ridden it much yet (thanks Kelly). I like all of my bikes, but am really surprised how much I like the cross bike. I know it is not as fast as the road bikes, but it is really fun.
