Getting close to ordering a rigid steel SS MTB. It'll be a 29er because that's whats available built up. If I can't get that then probably a Kona Explosif 27.5 frame. Should be cool.

how different is the Explosif from the unit?

The Explosif is basically a 650b version of the Honzo. Much more slack, and designed for a longer fork and dropper post.

Plus the Unit now comes with the "natural steel" clear finish, which I don't think is optimal for Hawaii corrosion-wise.

I'd assume clear is still clearcoated...

I had a SS Cannondale 29er for a while. Really fun bike. I sold it for some unknown reason.

I just put a niner carbon fork on mine. I tried rigid back many years ago, and bought a suspension fork after a year of riding. I can't wait to try it again though with a much nicer fork.

dont expect any miracles:no:

A rigid fork is a rigid fork...and that one is even stiffer than most, but very light.

A larger volume tire with low psi is something that actually makes a difference.

single speed mtb's are so much fun. I'm itching to get a 29er this year!

Yeah I know. It was one of those deals you can't pass up. I figure I can swap it in/out depending on where I am riding. I may even put it on my geared bike for certain races.

^ I've done most of my MTBing on a '91-'92 Cannondale/w Pepperoni fork. Full rigid is a stretch these days, but we'll see.

My 2007 Ted Wojcik recently converted to a single speed (Black Cat drop outs) by Circle A Cycles. The build has slightly changed since these photos:

Hey thanks all! :)

^ What kind of rear axle is that?

Just a regular 9mm axle with a early 1990s Nuke Proof Twist Tight skewer.

Is that a 26 or 29er?

26.

I don't get the whole SS thing. I tried it but couldn't stand it. Maybe it's because I live in the mountains and the terrain varies wildly but I could never find a happy gear.

What is it you find attractive about it?

when I ride in the mountains I just use a really easy gear, something like 38-24.

I like being able to go ride and not have to think about shifting gears. I find gears on a mtb to add a layer of frustration to riding that simply isnt there on a single speed.

I also like the significant reduction in maintenance and overall cost. I commute on a single speed cross bike for this reason. one chain lasts me all winter with zero lube and no cleaning.

I don't mind the suffering up hills, and I dont mind walking either.

Did that used to be green?
Nice headbadge. I had Jen Green make the original in brass for my TW 29er. I recently sold that baby blue frame to someone here on the forum I think.

Yup (http://bikesbeerboston.tumblr.com/image/24898374213)!

If you come down to ride Cape Cod, send me a message. This time of year the trails here at Otis are full of large groups of Bostonians.

For the original poster: riding SS mtb is fun for so many people! It makes as much sense as any other recreational cycling.
I rode SS MTB exclusively for many years, including endurance races, because of the reduced maintenance. My bike was always ready to go.

I ride SS too on the MTB, anything on pavement I have gears though.

The range of speeds on the road where I want to be pedaling (2-35 mph) to be much greater than that on the MTB (2-15 mph).

I find either on the SS or the geared bike my times are pretty similar on the trails here. After riding the SS I am more beat up and tired though.

yes it's more of a full body workout if you are climbing!

My commuter bike has 42x16 gearing with big, heavy tires, and it takes an insane amount of effort to climb. Thankfully most of my commute is flat.

Ever try a 'dinglespeed?' Myself and some friends have them and love. Road gear (34 or 35:16) and mountain gear (32 or 33:18) as long as total teeth are the same chain tension should be close enough not to require adjustment. Gear change takes 1 min.

We have several ss mtbs at our cabin including a Stumpjumper, a Bob Brown and this Miyata my kids beat on.

Love them.

I have not, I rely too much on my bashguard to save my chainring to consider that.
