Got a 72 year old friend on a tight budget. Rides a 70's Raleigh with well over 100,000 miles on it. He says over 200,000 miles. He rides 7000-8000 miles per year.

Had mostly 8 speed Shimano 105 parts on it now. 8 speed Bar ends, 11-28 cassette, short cage RD, 39-53 double front crank. Ultegra Hubs, etc. He's pretty big, and wanted a triple to help him get up some hills. A week or so ago, I had asked the forum some questions about using a 8's or 9's chain with 8's bar ends.

So bought a VGC used 10 speed Campagnolo Centaur Triple 30-42-53 Crankset, BB, and like new Centaur Triple 10 speed FD on E Bay for $89 plus $10.60 shipping. He contributed a new 8 speed chain.

Put the 10's crank on, 10's FD, new 8's chain with short cage (55 MM center to center on pulleys) RD, dialed in the Index shifting, and it works like a charm.....over about 1/2 of the cassette on small ring....that's enough. In middle ring, wide chain only rubs the edge of big 10's ring on the 11 cog (told him not to do that). He's a happy camper. And he knows how much of the rear cassette he can use with the small ring. And big to big will still shift should he accidently do that (barely).

When his budget permits, I'll work him in a med cage RD, 9's chain, and hopefully 9's bar end and cassette starting wih 12 or 13 someday.

But what he's got today works amazingly well for his use. It's amazing the parts that can be made to work together when necessary.

Florida has hills? That should last him a long time!

On W side of Orlando, N of the Disney area, is a large area of very steep sand hills. Grove owners never allowed roads to curve around going up, so it's 1/4 mile straight up, 1/4 mile straight down. Lots of folks need low gears to get up in some places. Most are surprised to learn of this.
