Does owning a lightweight carbon fibre bike cut down your commuting time? Lance Armstrong on a Trek BikeContrary to expectations, a trial carried out by anaesthetist Dr Jeremy Groves from the Chesterfield Royal Hospital in the UK suggests that cyclists should pay more attention to the weight of the rider than the bike!

The article is a bit thin on details. Specifically the type of terrain he's riding...

I would like to tack on this article, on the subject of Aero

http://www.bicycling.com/bikes-gear/bikes-and-gear-features/revenge-nerds

Synopsis: 75% of aero drag is the racer and his clothing. It is more important to not wear gloves in a TT, then the choice of front wheel. And how you attach your race number matters more than your wheelset.

Well in my case, im like 60 pounds overweight and sure even a bike made of pure air wont help me to go super fast anyways.

When i was riding 25 years ago my bike weighted a ton compared with the one I have right now, and heck i was able to do 40 km/h with 42x16 w/o any problems in a relatively flat terrain... now with 60 pounds more in my ass, a bike that weights maybe 2 kg less i havent been able to even reach 30 km/h with tail wind since a very very very long time :D

As some people say, is the biker not the bike.

I've always been deceptively fast, even slower than I look.

Sure, but who was it that claimed it wasn't about the bike? Anyway, fit trumps material with almost any frame, IMO.

Couldn't agree more about the fit. My college cycling coach would destroy all of us on his old steel frame with downtube shifters.

Fit trumps all, then body weight, then material. I got a Reutal fit and am very happy, at this time I'm about 10# heavier than I like, and I ride a carbon bike because I love how it rides, handles, and accelerates...not so much because of its light weight (though I don't complain about the weight).
