yes they were/are. if you've got real style you retrofit the carbon blades from new record on them and put ten speed guts in them like jan.

I was in Italy recently, where I had the great privilege and honour of watching Cipo on the Italian version of 'Dancing with the Stars'. Our hero was seen wearing a RED CRAVAT!

The second time I saw the program Super Mario, being the shy and retiring type, had basically taken over hosting the show from the two usual hosts. What a star.

I don't think Mario Cipollini actually smokes. Nobody here thinks it is healthy. The picture is pretty cool and Cipo is the last of a dying breed: A person who is at the top of his profession who is not just a corporate smiley face who babbles corporate speak. He is what he is and has charisma.

But what do I know? I think the modern 10-speed shifter shape is much better!!! The only problem with it is that it cannot be used (very well at least) on Cinelli Criterium bend handlebars.

I wish I could take a pic of them huddled out in the smoking area of the hospital with an IV bag hanging, cath bags full of urine, gowns gaping, and them puffing on cancer sticks. Now that's pathetic...

Forget the cigarette, I want those handlebars! Jerk, those are obviously Cinelli's, but what model? They look like they have way more reach than the 66's.

You guys do realize he's not smoking because he's hooked right? ...It (supposedly) opens up the lungs a little more for that final sprint.

they're 66s but not the last incarnation of that venerable handlebar. the jerk thinks they were called ergo 66 or something. they had a bit more throw and reach to them than the last junk 66s which are deep but have no throw/reach.

. . . smoking ain't cool. It's an unhealthy, vile, smelly, addiction that all of us pay for through higher taxes and insurance premiums to deal with the health problems it causes. I've always been astonished at the things considered "cool," how many of them are just plain stupid or dangerous--often both--and how people keep coming up with new ones. Lately it's "cool" to go jumping off cliffs on your mountain bike a la "Red Bull Rampage." Yep, it's real "cool"--until you land, as a fair number of those guys have found out.

But to Cipo's credit, I strongly doubt he did this for more than effect. Cipo always seemed to have a keenly tuned sense of showmanship, seizing upon the gesture that would grab the most attention, whether it was "illegal" team kit or his fashion statements or draping himself in beautiful half-naked women.

Additionally, when the margin between victory and defeat--and big time sponsorship dollars or not--in the sprint is often measured in hundreths of a second, I just can't imagine the team management would let him get away with this more than the once.

But I admire him precisely because he often went his own way, which seems to be rarer than ever these days.
