ok.....my goal is to have a polished aluminum rear der. durace ace is nice but the p body and pulley cage is aluminum. i just purchased the dark colored ultra r der thinking it was all metal including p-body. good news was the pulley cage is aluminum, but the p-body must me made out of hard plastic or carbon. does anyone know which shimano r. der has an aluminum p body?

damn this is getting complicated. thanks again for your input, bill

What is a p body? I thought that all shimano RD's were aluminium.

As a guy who has done a lot of things for the sake being unique, I'm not judging you. I just want to know why you are going to all this work when Campagnolo offers two polished silver groups?

The silver 105 derailleur has a polished outer plate. If you polished the pulley cage it would likely give you what you want.

b body is the part in between the main der body and the pulley cage. dura ace it's made of carbon but because of shimanos amazing finishes it seems like metal until you remove the top coat.

the dark gray ultegra r der p-body is made of composite plastic.

i'm wondering if the lighter metal colored shimano r der 6700 p-body is made of aluminum or does it have a top coat color?

thanks, bill

buy a nice 7800 rear d. and be done with it? works just dandy with any iteration of shimano 10 sp shifters.

post some pics of your handiwork, i'm curious to see what you've done.

thidgenbird--i'm thinking whforrest wants polished, as in chrome/mirror-like. not silver clear ano (like athena 11sp alloy).

Sounds like a 7800 groupset is in order.

54ny77-,if Athena isn't bright enough, it would still be easier to polish.

I'm also in for pics. A polished 7900 sounds fun. That's reason enough for me, I'm just curious what propted it.

i'm in too deep...........

believe me i'm asking the same question. of course the metal athena is amazing.

when i started this project i made a few wrong assumptions and didn't ask enough questions. (i didn't know what it was I didn't know)

i'm just a cyclist looking for a metal p-body........what more could i ask?

yes, i am laughing at myself........

Ultegra r der body is aluminum, the pulley cage is aluminum, but the pbody is made of composite plastic.

Better photo- started to sand and noticed main body is metal, p-body to right is not

here's a pic of a 7700 crank i polished a few years ago.

i have a couple of more recent vintage ultegra cranks that i picked up for great deals from fellow forum members, and plan on experimenting with polishing them at some point. projects, projects...

I would be tempted to polish the aluminum and finely sand the plastic. I don't think a little black would spoil it. If you don't like it, it would at least have more resale value than current state.

polishing stuff is tedious work, but very satisfying when done well.
