OK, I deserve to brag a bit here, I am at about 40.8 mpg total so far at +6700 miles driven and here is a snap shot of my last drive from fill up to home about 50 highway miles. Temps outside +35 F and speed at 59 mph on ECO Cruise. The trip was BelAir MD to Kensington MD 95 south to 495 to home. 95% hwy. Car is 2013 Ford C Max SEL.

That is nice, how discharged was the battery after only .9mi of regen?

I am now a hybrid fan after recently becoming A certified high voltage technician.

That's impressive, although a Jetta diesel gets similar mileage. What does the "99% Brake Score" mean?

Old Jetta tdi does get better than 48~mpg, in a new clean diesel it is tough, I got 47mpg in a 2013 Jetta tdi sportwagon manual driving from worlds back to Chicago, I had to drive 63mph in a 65mph zone to achieve that.
Here are examples http://www.fuelly.com/car/volkswagen/jetta/2012

I kinda want one of those. I currently drive a 1995 bronco :) I rarely check milage, but the best I've seen was about 15mpg. This was fully loaded when moving with the AC on high.

My wife's fusion (4cyl gas) got 36mpg from St. Paul to Des Moines.

55mpg in a 1981 Rabbit diesel that I used to commute from RI to Somerville 20 years ago. 85 miles one way cost me $1.05. I was shaking for an hour after arrival.

I'll have to find my pictures.

350Z - 35 or 36 mpg, driving from Delaware to CT. Or maybe it was Philly to CT. Or both. Avg speed was in the 65 mph range so cruising speeds were 75+ (usually it's about 10 mph faster than the computer's avg speed). The Z got really good mileage for a relatively fast car. If I drove stupid to/from work I'd get 26-28 mpg (CT-NY-CT). Avg in the high 60s (so driving at 75-80 most of the time), max 110-125, 0.8-1.0 G in exit/entrance ramps according to the GtechRR.

This car set my expectations really high for mpg in performance cars. If a car wouldn't get 30 mpg in normal driving while doing 0-60 in 5.5 seconds then it wasn't worthy. Many "normal" cars wouldn't get over the same 35 mpg in similar higher speed conditions, including my now-wife's Civic EX and that didn't have a lot of oomph.

Although the Z was just 2 seats we could go to a race with my bike, 3 spare wheels, my enormous gear bag, a cooler, floor pump, two helmets, and not have anything jammed up front with us.

Jetta Sportswagen TDi - 52.x mpg, somewhere north of VA where we got fuel then up to CT. Avg speed was in the 55? mph range. We were so happy with the TDi that we got me a Golf to replace the Z.

281 miles on the below tank:
https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/247220_10150268534018824_1401975_n.jpg

The tank before that - we got stuck in rush hour in Baltimore but we managed 48 mpg for 587 miles.
https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc6/255598_10150268209363824_4010074_n.jpg

*for accuracy - we typically get 42 mpg in high winds, low traffic, on the highway, in the winter, like last night. 46-48 mpg is normal in regular wind, low traffic, warmer weather. 50+ mpg is only when there is heavy but steadily moving traffic. In our 1-3 mile commute in town we get 32-38 mpg (wife works 1 mile away, day care is 2 mi, my old job is 3 mi).*

(We also had our first kid on the way so the Z wouldn't work for us much longer).

That is great for a TDI, most my friends and customers are in the high 30's. I wonder how much the 20% bio-diesel in IL impacts mpg?

We've got an average of 45 mpg in our TDi for the past 4000ish miles.

Our TDI Jetta wagon is routinely 40+. Drives from IL to the east coast have been upwards of 46 for the 800 mile trip. The bladder needs emptying and kegs need stretching long before the tank needs filling.

2003 Golf TDI gets 40+ MPG all the time-I drive it sensible but do not try to get mileage. Working on getting a new Jetta Sportswagen TDI. Kids are gone now but I want my haul my bike inside the car if I can.

I like how all the TDI owners came out of the woodwork as soon as fuel mileage was mentioned...lol.

I'm getting around 40mpg with my '01 Jetta auto...trying to see how much life I can get out of the transmission. 95% of my driving is to work and back, 23 miles round trip.

It is funny about the TDi owner thing. After all that I think I'm going to trade in the Golf TDi. I need a larger hauler and am hoping that new SUV TDi comes out before my van dies. We want to keep the JSW though.

Amazingly consistent 51 mpg over the summer and early fall months in our new Prius V, mixed city and highway miles.

However with ~ 80% city driving and winter weather and snow it's closer to 40-42 mpg.

55mpg in a 1981 Rabbit diesel that I used to commute from RI to Somerville 20 years ago.

In 1985 me and my best friend drove from Chicago to Rocky Mtn National Park then to Yellowstone and back in a diesel Rabbit. We got 54 mpg over the whole trip which totaled 2800 miles. Considering I only had $140 in my pocket for the the three week trip it was great. We had two road bikes on top of the car otherwise we would have gotten better mileage.

That stupid Rabbit was the best college car ever.

Subaru Outback diesel: autoroute (speeds 80-85 mph), highway, mountains, small roads - 45mpg.

Up and down the mountain between house and town (2000 vertical ft, 9-10% grades), winter driving with snow - 38 mpg.

Best I ever did with the Honda Insight (original model, not the one they came out with a few years ago) was 90 mpg, mix of mountain, hill driving on small roads. Otherwise got around 65-70 mpg on average though that has changed as the car's old now (13 years, one of 2 in France) and the batteries aren't like they used to be. More like 50-55 mpg up and down the mountain and driving in traffic.

I'm forever stunned by how little fuel the Outback uses. I mean we're talking a full-sized station wagon with full-time all-wheel drive. Plus the car has some impressive power, though to be honest I rarely use it. I'm way more into minimizing fuel consumption than driving fast. Fast for me is the ol been there, did that story.

My daily driver and bike hauler is a 2012 Honda CRV. It will haul two bikes in back upright with fork mount (has a low floor)....if not over 56 CM or so. It replaced my Honda Element bike hauler. About 27-28 in urban driving, and 33-35 on long highway trip around the 65-70 MPH range. Not the most impressive mileage, but 87 is a lot cheaper than diesel, you don't have to use gloves to fuel up, or stand in smelly area. It's not an expensive car either, with Honda reliability and resale. It drives just fine, but is kinda a boring vehicle. But it does what I bought it to do.

Wife's vehicle a differnt story. Not so fuel efficient.

I'm jealous that you European folks get to own the diesel version.
We just replaced our 98 V70 AWD (bought new on 7/1/97) with a 13 Subaru Outback. Wanted to love the Fusion Hybrid, but the ride was too soft for us after so many years in the Volvo. Subaru felt like best replacement and mileage beats the beast from Sweden, but we'll never see numbers in the 40s...

I love that folks try to get the best mileage they can, hell I try myself. My big boat ford Taurus gets mid twenties around town and low thirties on a trip. I can carry four bikes (roof rack) four or five people very comfortably and it's a very cheap car to repair. Not to mention a huge trunk!
What does bug me is Joe Slow driving his Prius at just under the speed limit and when he has to come to a stop it takes him about a mile and a half to get back up to the cruising speed again just so when he gets to the office he can brag about getting 40 mpg! I know I'm being an ass, but try getting stuck behind these types every time you hop in the car. I'm surrounded by earth travelers where I live. Some very nice folks but they sometimes forget they're not alone on the roads!

on a recent road trip, my Acura RSX Type S was getting 28 mpg while averaging 83 mph. had some stiff winds to contend with, tho.

best ever mileage with it was 33 mpg (non-ethanol days)...

1998 Mercedes C230, automatic, 35-38 mpg on road trips at about 60 hour. maybe my car was some sort of fluke, but while i had it, i could not believe how little gas it used on road trips. not bad for a heavy little luxury car!

Oh...I love hypermiling! I run B75-99 biodiesel whenever I can in a 2006.5 Jetta TDI...supposedly it gets ~3% less mileage due to lower energy content...but right now it's about 30 cents cheaper too.

Leaving work, got about 7 miles per one large bowl of the chicken gumbo at lunch, from the Greek family that runs the little cafeteria on the top floor of our building. Good sized serving -- maybe half a liter? So maybe 8 bowls per gallon means 56 miles per gallon of gumbo? I reckon I coulda done a little better if I'd swapped the cheap Vittoria cross clinchers for a lighter version of the file tread, or maybe even better with a road tire.

Pretty darn good anyway.

And we shall not speak of emissions.

my jetta sportwagen TDI isn't even broken in yet, under 4k miles.
lifetime avg on the built-in computer says 34.6mpg, though that's probably 90-95% city driving.

In the 60+mpg range with my little 2006 Insight (the last year they made the funny looking little Al bodied version). My wife and I loved that car, but sold it before being transferred from CA to D.C.

Kept her 1994 Acrua Integra LS though, which with synthetic oil and a light foot can get over 40mpg on the highway -- and it goes like a scalded cat, when needed (unlike the Insight...)
