I went to a swap meet in St. Paul this morning and picked up a used Surly Crosscheck for $50.00 including a Chorus headset with some life left in it.
The size should be right and even if it is not perfect, it was only $50.00. The seller is known to some friends and he says he can ride it no-handed on the rollers so it should be straight. It has some good wear and a couple of dents in the top tube, but otherwise looks good. It is clearly a bike with at least a few seasons left in it.
This is one of the earlier Crosschecks. It is made of Reynolds 631 tubing and is welded. I believe I will build it up with a fixed gear or with a single speed freewheel for the gritty weather we have here in the Twin Cities.
I also picked up a Cinelli 13 cm 1/A stem and a Cinelli 65-40 bar for the bike for $10.00! Oh, by the way, I also got a set (4) of Shimano XT cantilever brakes for $20.00.
