Is there any reason this would not work? I've been using an older 6600 crank with the 7801 chain and it has been fine, but I'm seeing some good deals on 6700 cranks right now and was thinking of picking one up. Maybe it's being phased out, which is when I typically look to buy. But I'm currently using a 7801 chain that only has about 1500 miles on it and I have 2 more in reserve (Amazon Gold Box = $24.00. Couldn't resist). Shimano's compatibility charts say no, but I cannot see why not. My other components are 6600 shifters and brakes, 6700 RD, FD and cassette. Currently it all works great.
Any real world experience with this combo? Or for that matter, a 6700 crank with a 6600 chain, which would be the same as a 7801 chain.
Thanks.

i have that exact setup. no issues that i am aware of.

7801 chains are nice. i used 3 for a tandem application running 6700 triple drivetrain (pricey timing chain using 7801, but lighter than 5700 and i had a bunch sitting around and figured what the heck, might as well use 'em).

24 bucks, where? what's amazon gold box? very good price, i could use a few more spares.

i have mixed & matched 6600, 6700, & 7800 cranks, brakes, chains, levers, drivetrain, etc. no problems whatsoever.

Gold Box are hourly deals from Amazon that are one hour only. I happened to catch it once back in September.

There shouldn't be issues with that set-up.

But, coming to Gold Box deals, I'm seeing something else altogether...is the GB also customized per user (I don't think so)?

I don't believe they are customized at all. I just happened to check at a lucky time.

5600/5700/6600/6700/7800/7900 (the exception is 7900 front shifter and front derailleur) all play very well with each other, are fully compatible and interchangeable with each other.

Think about it, why wouldn't a 10s chain NOT work on a 10s crank..particularly w/i one manufacturer?

Use any 10s chain with any (10s) crank w/o issue or problem..even mixing manufacturers.
