Any accountants in the house? I committed to a custom last year, but will pay for it this year... do we count that as a cash expense this year? or an expense last year into some sort of prepaid asset?

;)

There's no choice for "prefer not to answer."

Leave it to the Business School member to ask that, Matt!

Actual spending in calendar year, more or less.

My guess is that you entered into a commitment last year when you signed the contract. No 2012 expense. Most likely, you will have to pay for the bike around the same time as the bike is delivered. Therefore, you will not have to accrue for the expense. You will recognize the expense immediately (cash basis) when you pay for the bike. Not sure about any deposits you may have paid along the way, but believe that you had no liability (or expense) until the bike was delivered. You will probably like the bike and, therefore, there will be no contingency that needs to be considered. Hope that helps.

Oh man. Last year was such a spendy year this year I've vowed to be patient and my resolution is no new bikes unless I sell one.

Do we include related expenses? My new elbow could be construed as a cycling expense.

My wife might stumble onto this so I'm going to say $167.23

no option for a net profit? I actually liquidated a bunch of bike stuff this year and had a bike replaced by insurance so I'm pretty sure I actually turned a profit

Thankfully, I made more than I spent.

Justification, my friends, justification.

back in the 80's one the many reasons i got more committed to cycling coming from motorcycle racing was thinking of all the money i would save...

Whatever I spent, it's better than spending $$ on coke and hookers.

Everything should be x2. I have a very hard time believing anyone on this site spent <1k in a year. It's a good thing I have a screen name. Mods, I certainly hope you won't release my identity, even under subpoena. My wife would absolutely kill me.

I spent a ton this year, most of it on my wife. What can I say, she is all in on this game and I get her what ever she wants> We have a blast riding together.

I probably spent more than 1000, but my net spend was probably less. Race fees add up!!

Just for grins I ran a report in Quicken from 1991 to present. Needless to say bike expenses were a big number from over 20 yrs of stuff but well worth the cash and time. I don't want to show this number to my wife.

Way less. I replace tires and brake pads when they wear out, I change my chain every 1500 miles and every other season it's new cables and bar tape. The sad part is I work in a bike shop full of new bikes, parts and accessories, none of which I want. What I have is good enough for how I ride - maybe that's the part you have a hard time believing...

Speak for yourself! :p

Seriously, if my Tour de France trip last July counts as cycling related expenses, then Thank God I'm not married or attached or I'd be a dead man.

I keep telling myself that the expense is justifiable, given the shocking discounts I get on a regular basis working in the industry, but then holding the number up against what I make in a year as a grunt mechanic.... yikes.

Well, last year was one of those years where I uncluttered my garage of my extra bikes. I sold a Zanc and an older Litespeed combined for about $2,500. I also sold a pair of tubular custom wheels for about $750. I bought a new, coupled Zanc and had it painted, total expense about $2,000. Supplies, tires, etc. probably $400. Net-net, looks as though I'm up about $800. Not bad.

I'm still currently down to one built up road bike for the first time in years. The Zanc I bought and had painted still sits in the box back from the painter. I'm waiting for the warmer weather before building it up. No big plans for custom rides or anything like that this year so I guess I'll be good for 2013.
