... Say around 35c? Does such an animal exist and have you tried them?

Vittoria Randonneur Hypers. I think they changed the name to Voyager Hyper. Be sure to get the Hyper version, they're a noticeable step up from the normal ones. I've been through a few sets, been very happy. They ride much better than the Schwalbe Marathon Supremes I've tried.

i second Hyper randonneurs. i had 38mm and currently use 32's on my winter bike. very light for a big tire. they measure true and do come in a 35mm version

Cool, thanks!

Crown clearance aside, how large a tire can you put on a standard clincher road wheel (just curious)?

i have friend in the 225 pound range. he uses hybrid 35-38mm tires on a velocity deep v rim (20mm wide) without issue but he is only tooling around the neighborhood/city

ive used jack brown tires (33mm) on Open pro rims without issue

my mountain bike tires are usually 45-55mm wide and their correspsondent rims are no more than 23-24mm wide and they dont blow off at low pressure

Rimbo 35s

Work good, last a long time. With lower pressuse ride very well

Sheldon Brown offered this chart on tire width compared to rim width:

Tire Chart (http://sheldonbrown.com/tire-sizing.html#width)

However, as he notes, you can exceed the dimensions listed there with out any problems. I would guess that 35mm tires on standard road rims would be pushing it a bit, but probably not a problem.

I run 29er MTB tires (700C 2.3") on open pros without any problems at all.

35mm tires will be fine.

I have used the 35 ribmo on Deep Vs, open pros and now on dyads.

No problem at all with any of the above rims.

Not saying I want to go this big, but I'm thinking about trying out some larger tires on the Effin Cross Bike.

Oh here it is. was looking for this thread. how about Jack Browns? how are they for flats? I've always ridden Randos and I love them for durability but wanted something faster rolling.

i love my non-armoured jack browns. decently quick for a bigger tire. measures a true 33mm wide

they sound good on all fronts, but I'm worried about flats living in Brooklyn. I'd just really like to avoid Vittoria Randos if at all possible.

durability so far is good. they have the thin Pasela-like tan sidewall but the tread is smoother/faster than a Pasela. they are a bigger version of the 28mm Rolly Polly.

Lots of favorable reviews of these lately. Note that the "700x35" actually measures 30mm wide, while the "700x45" measures 39mm wide.

I just ordered some "700x35's" for my daily rider. I'll post impressions and a comparison to good old Pasela's in the future.

I'm really interested in some of the "700x45's" for my 29er. Wish they were a true 45 though!

I have been through three of the Green (one front and two rears). Durability for me has been great. I use these tires for gravel rides and I have used them for commuting on a MUP to Downtown Denver. The path is a frequent hangout for homeless so there is a lot of broken glass. The only flats I have had were from goatheads. They are really good about not picking up glass. I rode the last rear tire down to the chords. I never had problems with cuts, sidewalls, etc.

I maybe have two flats a year with these tires. I would get them again, but I want to try the Voyage Hypers next just for kicks.

The Kojaks are great for weight and rolling resistance but are only OK in terms of flat resistance. I feel like the Marathon Supremes offer almost the same performance with the benefit of being bomb-proof.

I just picked up a pair of Jack Brown blues and I look forward to trying them out! I have a pair of Specialized Borough 32's on now (it's what I had laying around) and although light and supple they seem to pick up every pebble! I constantly hear the road grit rattling around in my fenders and I frequently get flats. Stoked to try something different.

I run Resist Nomads in 28(true 28) 35's (measured to 31) and 45's (measured to a fat 41) and also the 26x2.25

I love them all!

Gumwall or black, at under $25 a tire they are quite a steal! Grab a pair, you wont regret it.

Challenge Eroica should be racing tire fast (as well as racing tire expensive) but only 30-31mm so not really in Fat Boy territory.

FYI this guy updated his review of them on another forum and said, "I will second the move to the Vittoria tires mentioned. While the Nomad was not a bad tire, it defiantly fell into the category of, you get what you pay for. For lower speeds and around town it was fine, and it even did fine on the above mentioned tour. The thing is that it would occasionally shimmy at speed. I have been running the Randonneur hyper and pro for a couple of months now, and the 38mm Hyper is leaps and bounds better than the Nomad."

really trying to decide right now if the Jack Browns are worth the $60 apiece entry fee. I really want skinwalls tho, and I'm super tired of Randos. Have had two pairs that lasted me four years (two years per pair) of riding 40 miles a day, with 3 flats total in all that time, but I really hate how slow they roll. think I'm down to Hypers, Jack Browns, or Conti gatorskins. possibly Paselas, just because they are skinwall.

Haven't tried the Kojacks yet but I've logged several thousand miles on Schwalbe Super Motos, their 2.35" wide and surprisingly fast and very cool!!

I've had 19mph average 50 mile rides on my Ibis Ti Mojo -hardtail- with these.

OK, Just looked into those "Kojacks" and that's my next tire for the Mojo.

2.00'' width, 6 ounces lighter "Each" compared to the Moto's -Ok, 0.35" narrower than the the Moto's-, same rolling resistance level rating -each rate the highest on the Schwalbe website scale- while offering better Puncture resistance & Durability. And the Kojacks are rated up to 70 psi while the Motos are only Max. rated for 55.

Sounds like a serious tire!

Sounds like a serious tire!I've used both the 26x1.4 and 26x2.0 Kojaks on a tandem on a vast mixture of "road" surfaces and have only good things to say about them.

Who luvs ya, baby?

I love my Kojaks, but they very thin at the sidewall. For the wide lightweight tires, you can't do much better. Seems like a good blend of the JB Blue and Greens.

I'm ordering up a set of 700x35. I figure at my size, that's like the average sized rider on 23's!;)

The 28mm Gatorskins I've used were so heavy and dead feeling. I'd give the Jack Browns or Pasela 35mm a shot. I wouldn't say they're any more flat prone than any other tire without a kevlar belt, but I don't think comparing flat experiences is really all that valuable.
