Is this the comeback year for the Italian ? Maybe, judging by his performance at this super-fast finish.

Pippo gunning for a repeat of his 2006 win at San Remo? He was with Quickstep at that time...ironically the person who can potentially stop him, Mark Cavendish is now at his former team.

Not a particularly big race, but good to see him actually racing. In the past few years, he has been content to sit in and not challenge others in the classics. I like Pippo, I hope this is the beginning of a good years and rivalry with Boonen and co.

I agree, not a big big race but you can see how patient and comfortable he is all of the way to the line. Hopefully he's able to ride well in the classics this season.

It's not a monument, but it is a big race for Italians. It's basically a season opener in the mold of Het Volk in Belgium (now known as Het Nieuwsblad or something along those lines). Additionally, there are no easy victories in bike racing. Some are harder than others, but none are easy. You take what you can. This is a race with a lot of motivated riders hoping to make an early mark on the season and take some pressure off.

Pretty big deal for Pozzato really because the past couple years have been pretty spartan. I hope he has a successful season.

Trivia: Ron Kiefel won this race in 1985 and may have been riding a Serotta. I believe Serotta was involved with the 7-Eleven team then though I'm no longer certain. Someone who is more knowledgeable about the Serotta/7-Eleven connection could probably answer that. This was, at the time, a huge win for the US team.

I do hope that Pippo has a good season this year and can add another Monument to his collection.

There have not been too many cyclists who have looked as good on a bike as Pippo. He is a joy to watch. "That's how it's supposed to be done" I always think to myself.

Don't you know, only god can judge him, bro!

If nothing else, he's a testament to the effort required to have an even tan while spending all day on a bike.

CONI judges him so often that his nickname is Filippo Pozzitivo.

Pippo is a clown. I've never liked his racing style, and neither have his peers (although I don't know why, they beat him 99.999% of the time). Working with Ferrari last year? He claims he didn't know he wasn't supposed to. Okay, Pippo.

And he gets caught so many times the code name on his "bags" is Filippo Pozzato.

He brings some excitement to an otherwise robotic peleton. When he actually does something.

He's a clown, but a serious clown who wins significant races.

Understood, but I am not a fan by a long shot. He has plenty of non-whiner, likeable peers who are a lot easier to root for (and who routinely kick his ass).

he can't possibly beat Cav in a clean sprint finish

No doubt! But there's not many that can. No more than a handful even have a chance of beating Cav in a sprint. But then, Pippo will have a chance at a sprint win in many races that Cav won't feature in the final due to his lack of climbing prowess.

Apparently not everyone thinks he's a clown. From the Inrng:
Nobody seems to have a bad word to say. He’s a likeable rider, the playboy image he’s tried to present covers an often modest and sincere man who lives at home with two dogs for company.

Always loved his Ridley.

My favorite ever pro bike. I am pretty certain it was a custom though unavailable to the masses. Ridleys normally have really high head tubes.

true, but he's been working on that weakness this winter. He's now quite na bit lighter. I expect him to stay the course on the Cipressa and Poggio climbs.

Both of those riders have won that race. In a straight up sprint it's almost impossible for anyone to beat Cav. But it's not always a straight up sprint and M-SR is different from a Tour stage.

Possibly my favorite race of the year!

I hadn't forgotten - second place is first loser?! I remember that he never attacked Tom, just went along for the ride

^ Yes, it's first loser, but it's still podium, and he wasn't just sitting in. Besides, no one could beat Tornado Tom last spring. Even his own teammates were left in the dust---look at Niki Terpstra's face here.

Thanks for chiming in, saab-pal and others too.

M-SR is my fav. race, bar none.:hello:

The extremely fast run-in to the finish makes me want to explode, puke, pee, punch, piss....no, it simply makes me want to run out and ride my bike the minute the race's over. It's also the ONLY cycing video I can bear to sit on the trainer for anything more than 30 mins.
