It seems to me that the very reason the bicycle is so appealing, is its potential to transform ordinary acts of everyday travel into magical experiences of beauty, fantasy, joy and freedom.

Nice.

Several years ago Bicycling Magazine had a "Why do we ride?"
poll/article. The answer that sticks with me to this day is:
"Because it feels like flying."

Like the quote but i I'm with vf. I don't think I'll ever forget the day I was commuting to work and along the trail I was riding, I happened to glance to my right. On the right is a view of a small creek and then just bay preserve. At the moment I happened to look over I saw a bird (egret? Or something) take off and we were parallel for like 30 secs but man, at that moment I felt like i was flying and had the biggest grin. Just felt so cool and free.

One of my best cycling memories.

Nice.

Ray;
Thanks for the inspiration.
It gives me hope on this 25 degree morning that there will be a
warm sunny day again.
Ah... to go out the door without 15 lbs of extra clothes. To stop at the turn
around to guzzle a water as the sweat rolls down. To get back on the
saddle and notice that you now have a 15 mph tailwind.

I need to live in a warm place!

Patrick Brady has a really nice article in Seven Cycles latest brochure (http://www.sevencycles.com/Webdata/Brochure_form.php):

We love the bicycle
not because it is efficient but because it makes
us efficient. We see the world; we flow through
it like water down a river and we move, yes, we
move like birds happily tethered to the earth, as
if being still is a theft of freedom.

Got a wicked cold so I'm kinda pissy this morning BUT the bicycle, any bicycle, is the tool, the means to the end. 'The 'bicycle' is appealing but the emphasis on the bicycle, rather than the ride, wears me out sometimes.
