I had a long week myself, going back to last weekend when I shoveled out two houses on Saturday after Nemo took a white *****e all over the North East... and then spent the day Sunday moving into a new house. All week was catch up time with work projects and school assignments... 5 too many back-to-back 12 hour days...
..but now I can relax. I'm drinking a Breckenridge Oatmeal Stout. It's mediocre but doing the trick. For some reason I'm on a Colorado beer kick... trying different things. I'm convinced I'm going to end up moving there in the next 5 years. Getting an early start on familiarity with the beers there.
Cheers!

Had some Ravines Riesling the other night. Then I saw a story on the news that drinking alcohol even in moderate amounts can contribute to cancer.
sigh
I have two bottles of Knob Creek Bourbon that I'm looking forward to... I think some classic whiskey sours are in the cards.

Picked up some carne asada tacos from a street vendor (taquero) so I had to pair them with a good Mexican beer, Negra Modelo. First choice was Bohemia, but the Kwik-E-Mart was out.

How about brewing your own, if your really into beer. Not only will you have some really tasty ale if you get proficient, but you can be creative as well. The key is to grind and mash yourself so that you have control of all the elements.
I even grew my own hops at one point, although you need the right climate for that.
Home brew makes a great gift for the beer lover as well.

I've made all different kinds. Last few batches.... blueberry mead (fairly sweet)... dandelion mead (liquid gold! not too sweet)... I think it was a ginger mead before that. I'm still experimenting with different yeasts.. but usually mine end up on the sweeter, dessert wine side.
I was just up in Mammoth all week, so I stocked up on some stuff from Mammoth Brewing. Their 395 IPA is pretty decent!

Dandelion mead... this i may need to try.
It was a ton of work plucking all the flower heads for it (a gallon pales worth)... so I only made a 1 gallon batch of the mead... but it was definitely worth it. I started off intending to make a dandelion wine... but it seemed reasonable to use a bunch of honey and make a mead out of it.
On the topic of wild herbs... I think my next batch will be an early spring nettle leaf mead. It'll probably be more medicinal than "good"... but I like trying weird wizard things.

Glad somebody said it. I have tried many of the beers mentioned, either a type or actual, lots of small brewery beers, IPA, Belgium dark, Guiness in Europe..and gotta say, none of them appeal to me. Dark, sweet, maple syrup, chocolate, wheat, heavy, hoppy, no thanks.
Pilsner, euro or US, Dutch, German, Chec, US..not expensive. I am a plebeian

Has anyone made hard cider? I'm thinking of brewing my first batch.
As I mentioned in an earlier post I've been drinking some Mammoth Brewing stuff lately, as I was just up there (and stocked up). Well last night I had their Devils Post Seasonal Double Pale Ale... Good stuff! Nice and hoppy yet fairly smooth. Highly recommended!
This was included in a Christmas package from a friend who is the purchasing agent for one of the largest liquor stores in the state. Since we don't have any teenagers in the house it's taking up space in the refrigerator. It's pretty disgusting but probably better than the canned Haggis we abandoned on his porch.

Has anyone made hard cider? I'm thinking of brewing my first batch.
A friend and neighbor of ours makes hard cider. They use, I believe, a champagne yeast. They start with cider they press themselves from locally grown apples. Probably a mix of northern varieties. I also recall them saying they have occasionally added raisins to increase the sugar level if the specific gravity levels are too low. Not sure how much brewing experience you have, but two important aspects are cleanliness and patience.
The resulting product is a relatively dry and delicious beverage that has no resemblance to the Mike's crap you might see at your market.
Good luck.

I don't mind cheap beer either. Pabst Blue Ribbon is my favourite cheap beer. I do love the Belgian beer though. Best band for the buck at my local package store is Leffe blonde.
I've cut most alcohol out of my diet though. Trying to loose ten pounds to get back to race weight. If only I could stop going to the local bakery.

ofcounsel, that's one of my favorites. Love, love, love Rochefort 10. And the other trappists, too.
I'm on a quest to find something similar, but domestic (cheaper, less environmental impact), but I like supporting the monks.
This morning I'm drinking some loose lease Earl Grey. Pinch some leaves in a mug, pour some hot water over it and sip. A few tea leaves in the mouth never hurt any body and when I'm at work this is a lot simpler.

What about Chimay Premiere?
$6.95 for a 750ml bottle in Canada
I've got a keg of my Porter on tap. Turned out great. All the musicians are draining it quickly.
Also on tap a nice California Ale. Think of a kinder gentler Sierra Nevada. not so hoppy.
Have a Dead Guy clone in the fermenter and after that's kegged I'm planning on a real German Maibach. But that takes a good 5 weeks in the fermenter.

I do like peat, and i prefer to keep it under $60 a bottle. I don't find Balvenie particularly peaty though, I find the sherry cask thing a little off-putting; however this seems to be the scotch that people give to me as gifts, and I'm currently working through a bottle of it (if it were Ardbeg or Macallan it'd be gone already). That'll teach me to not post before at least 2 cups. It has more peat than Balvenie, and I agree about the sherry cask, ok but not my first choice. I do have a bottle of Glenmorangie Quintana Ruban that is unfotunately, almost gone, aged in port casks.

Last night was a feast!
Got together with the next door neighbors and our mutual friends who ride MTB with us.
Started with some Westmalle Trippel, then had some Rochefort 8, and then onto Chimay Vintage Grand Reserve, with some North Coast Brewing Co. Brother Thelonious!
We cut up some baguettes and spread out with some St. Agur Blue cheese, some Ewephoria Sheep Milk Gouda and some Chimay Grand Classic cheese.
My wife made an awesome salad with field greens, strawberries, sunflower seeds, Blue cheese and some Champagne Pear Gorgonzola vinaigrette. She also made this awesome creamed corn that used a ton of cream cheese :) We also had mashed cauliflower.
Then....
http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s81/ofcounsel/photo78_zps281252e6.jpg
Then we put some dry aged rib eye and salmon on the grill...
It was a feast.... I've gotta climb a lot of ft. to work this off.
Oh yeah, and the side benefit was that our spouses were so satisfied with the selections (or just simply tipsy from the beer), they agreed to a multi-family trip to Vegas with side MTB trips to Bootleg Canyon by Lake Mead and Gooseberry Mesa/Hurricane in Southern Utah!!!! Woohoo!!!

Went to the liquor store yesterday for some of my crappy yet tasty Euro-trash/Canadian/German/Dutch beer..and was surprised that the 'local brews' section had taken over about 1/2 of the 'import beer' section...sign of the times, but not a good one for us who really haven't found a US 'micro' brew that I can drink..sorry, don't have a dog either.

getting harder and harder to find Lowenbrau....which is a great beer IMHO. So many great beers have disappeared in the competition for shelf space. The list of imports is too numerous and the slower moving Canadian and American beers are going away. Too bad we can only drink so much beer!
Might I suggest making a run up to Ft. Collins and tour the New Belgium operations? You need to make a reservation but its definitely worth the trip. They start the tour off with a beer and multiple stops along the way there's even more beer given to you. In their tasting room, pull your own taps of all most of their beers and they even take you through their casking room where they try out a few sours. Its a good tour even if their offerings don't appeal to your tastebuds. Fat Tire is just a solid American amber with everyday drinkability and I'm a big fan of the Ranger IPA.
Like everywhere else, the locally brewed scene has exploded thanks to the hipsters. They're brewing good beers, but the hype/push sometimes is a little much and their beers don't seem to be moving through the grocery stores as fast as they were initially. Maybe its cause their beers are just 'OK'????
That being said, there's one IPA from a group in Huntsville, AL that has been become one of my favorite beers in a long, long time. Its not quite as hoppy as a Ranger, but has the body of a Fat Tire. If you like IPAs and happen to be riding through north Alabama, give Monkeynaut a try....cool label too.

Euro Pils, I guess. The only one that 'came close' was Dale's Yellow Pils but didn't really like it. Nota fan of dark/hoppy/fruity/chocolate types, never had an IPA of any kind I liked. Pilsner Urquiel, Groeltz, Fosters, other Canadian beers.
As for NewBelgium stuff, like Fat Tire, no thanks.
Craft/micro type beers not to my taste but it's funny when one gets criticized for liking more mainstream... Beer.

The first craft brewed Pilsner-style beer I've had that I thought was worth the trouble was a recent one, The Wright Pils - from the guys who make Edmund Fitzgerald Porter, etc. Really nice stuff. Looked for it yesterday but they were out.

Pilsners are pretty much the many category ignored by the 'Mericans. Sorry, OP.
I'm not a fan of New Belgium, either. I've had a lot of stuff from them and they must be brewing to a pricepoint cause it's always one of the cheapest craft beers.

It's true that good Pilsners are somewhat neglected by many craft brewers. I think it may have to do with the fact that they're hard to get "right" and they take longer to produce. There are some good ones you'd like, though, OP. Lagunitas is one.
A friend of mine gave me a bottle of this Woodford Straight Malt. It's essentially Scotch, but aged in a new barrel opposed to a used one. Tastes how you would think; like a good, mild Scotch (not peaty or medicinal) but with caramel and vanilla from the oak. Pretty tasty; fun for the sake of experiment.

yes it ends this week...available only for two weeks starting the first Friday in February...rain or shine. I went last Friday. Got there at 9:30am...end of the line was on the corner at the intersection. Got in at 2:30. Door guy said they have been running out the day's allocation around 6:30-7:00 so people in line later...likely they missed out. That would SUCK! I felt lucky only five hours (it's could be 8+ easily) since I couldnt get there earlier and had to get back home for the evening.
Being in Texas, we don't get any of their beers, but have had Elder and liked it and just brewed a Elder clone that while maybe not close, wasnt bad.
elder and younger are so balanced and flavorful...really makes other beer pretty mediocre. is it the best? is a Vanilla the best handmade? won't go there. Can only say that if you love beer it would be hard to not be blown away by elder or younger.
BTW clearly no one told the homeless guy offering to stand in line that having an open baggie and firing up on the sidewalk is frowned upon.
Was that a growler fill, or a pint? I didn't think the bottled "younger".
on premise allocation is three 10oz glasses. no growlers bottles or take out. reality is at 10.5% any more than three will leave you blasted. its' soooo smooth and flavorful the killer buzz sets in mid-glass #2. plus if you dont eat, you will be eff'd up pretty quickly.
elder is bottled of course but still not easy to get even around here. the shops that get it sell out that day or the next. I bought a case while there so I could drink carefree and at my leisure. $5.25/bottle. since no preservatives, it's like milk, need to drink it in 1-2 weeks.

Hmm. This bottle was $55 and they said it was only available at the Bourbon Heritage Center, but who knows.
Is the 107 different from the Old Weller Antique? If so, I haven't had the latter. I love the 107, though, yes. The 12y is my favorite, though, as many would agree. Even Julian Van Winkle said that's his go to bourbon at home. I liked the bottles better before they changed them a few years ago.

could be they amped the price up for the store...who knows. the problem is access, not price, sadly.
yes, the 107 is a higher proof and the OWA is a third offering - not sure what makes it OWA. If I had to rank them I would say 12, 107, OWA....in order of flavor, smoothness etc. that said, you d have to have drank a lot of bourbons OR have them side by side to see the delta. they are good, and pretty close tin flavor.

Interesting. Thanks for the advice. The drink uses this, but only in small amount. Basically just floating the scotch on the top of the drink for the aroma. I'll look into the drink you suggested, as I'd prefer not to spend $70+ on something that isn't so good.

I'll rep for Detroit here. Not sure how widely available the products are, but if you find them, they're worth a try:
Two James Spirits: The first distillery in Detroit since prohibition. Their vodka is very good, I think their bourbon is great, and my wife is a big fan of their gin.
http://twojames.com/
Valentine Distilling: Just outside of Detroit. Started with Vodka, which is very good, and just won some big time awards for their gin. Just announced that they're going to expand production and distribution. They make a helluva dirty, blue cheese olive martini in their tasting room on the front of the distillery.

There's a just opened Maker's 46 sitting here, as we wait for the coals to get bloody hot enough for these steaks. :) Wish we had some real moonshine....
As a guy who has drank my share, believe me when I tell you there's a reason corn liquor is put to sleep in charred oak barrels for a few seasons. Moonshine is nice to take a sip from the freezer every once in a while, but I prefer whiskey that has been barrreled.

Taking pulls from the following:
Troegs Perpeutal IPA. Local packy had ridiculous deal on 12 pack of cans for $13.69. Alas that ended and grabed a Sierra Nevada 4 Way IPA Variety Pack. Have been a big fan of torpedo and thought to check out rest of the family. Mixed verdict on this one....drats.

Funky Jewbilation bomber from Shmaltz Brewing. Mrs. TR bought on a whim because of the bottle and graphics. It got a Gold Medal at beer world championships. Lots of cherry, aged in bourbon and rye whiskey barrels. It's big so it's a sipper. Batch and case # on the bottle. I need more and I will find it.

Past weekend I had a trip to NW Indiana as my daugter was interviewing for grand school (wait listed, ugh!). Anyway, I always try to find good beer -- this time I hti the mega-score with 3 Floyds in Munster!
Best named beer ever:
Blot out the Sun, an American Double/Imperial Stout--- the description of this beer is:
"Since the dawn of time it has been mankind's dream to blot out the sun." - C. Montgomery Burns
I had a lot of great beers there...from IPAs to Stouts...the food I had was pretty good too for updated pub fare.
Hint -- read the list of whats available to take home so you can order/try different beers at the bar --- quite a few are 'brewpub' only too.
The two beers I brought home below are "Robert the Bruce" scottish ale --- lots of great flavors in this one! and the second is Space Station Middlefinger -- a delicious IPA that is quite citrusy and with a light hoppy finish. Notice the space station on the label is giving you the bird! :

Just now finishing off a growler of Lagunitas Waldo's Special Ale. All I can say is . . . if you can find it, drink it! Fantastic Double Imperial IPA; 11.1%, 100 IBU. Use this (https://lagunitas.com/findwaldos/) to see if it is available anywhere near you. Seriously, IMO this is a must try brew.
Also drinking a lot of my local Agrarian Ale (http://agales.com/) farm-brewed beers, since they have re-opened for the season. Spent 3 hours there last Friday evening, and another 2 hours on Sunday. The ¡Poblamo! was just amazing, as was the Barrel Aged Dark Sparge and the Country Common Pre-Prohibition Corn Lager. The Oyster Porter was a treat. Wonderful family atmosphere, great food and beer. This mention won't be of use to the vast majority of you, but I am putting in a plug for any locals that haven't visited yet to give it a try.
And lastly, finishing off most evenings these days with one of these . . . and the two missing siblings - the Weller Antique 107 and Weller 12 both ran out a couple of days ago and I haven't had the opportunity to replenish the supply yet. The remaining Weller Special Reserve is usually destined for cocktails, while the 12 is always enjoyed straight, but the Reserve will have to stand in for another day or two.

No problem, don't mind at all. Exactly $28.95/bottle at all times here in tightly regulated and price controlled OLCC-land.
Not always in stock, but a very good friend owns multiple liquor stores, and always keeps me posted on the availability of this and several other items, and lets me buy my fill. I usually keep it simple and just buy a case at a time.

fark! the special reserve and 107 generally $20-25 or so, but I paid $54 for a 12 a few weeks ago since that was the price and the store had one. ONE. Thank you very much. and yea, used to be as much as you want for $25 a few years ago.
I don't know you should back up the truck at $29, but be happy since down here no one can get one.
19yo? never seen it. Unobtanium. Best I can do...someone comes through with $500 I would sell my PVW 15. Probably

Ha ya it's still around. They were bought out by Pabst years back and production moved to CA. Still avaible in certain areas, kinda like Rainier Beer.
I know I'm going to be stoned by all the beer enthusiasts for saying this but these days I'll take almost anything that's NOT an IPA. Seems like 70% of the craft beer market these days is ultra strong IPA's. I liked em at first but I'm bored now.
