Ultegra chain?

I need to buy an Ultegra chain for double crankset. 6701s are more deeply discounted than 6600s. What is difference between 6600 and 6701 besides pricing?

one is directional (6701), the 6600 is not. does it matter? to me, not really (i have ran both without incident or noticeable difference--better or worse--in performance). but to some it may make a difference. i run both 6600 and 6701 on ultegra 6700 by the way, on which the 6701 is the intended chain for optimal performance. to confuse the topic even more, i've mixed 6600, 6701 and 7801 chains on 6600, 6700, 7800 and sram red drivetrains. whatever's in the bin when i need to replace is what gets used.

i'm at the point where i dont buy chains that dont come with quick connectors now.

i'm pretty much on kmc chains across the board.

Shimano makes the quietest chain.

KMC Missing links are $11 for a card of 6 from your-favorite-outlet.

I am gradually changing my SRAM chain rings to Praxis. They recommend KMC or Shimano. Have a new set of rings arriving in a couple days and while shopping for chains, Ultegra 6701s can be had for 25-30 bucks cheaper. 6600s are +10 over the 6701s. As long as i am being frugal, figured id try to learn something at the same time.

Praxis dudes claimed KMC makes many chains for Shimano.

6700 and 7900 series are asymmetric. one side is "designed" to be facing out while the other face is supposed to face in. ostensibly one side would interface better with the chainring shift pins/ramps while the inside facing side would interface better with the ramps on the cogs. i suppose it makes sense in theory, but i couldn't tell a difference. 6600 is the same on both faces.

fwiw, they did away with that with 9000 and are back to symmetric sides.

get the cheaper one, they both work fine.

I've also switched all bikes from ultegra/dura ace to kmc chains with quick links. I have found they have about the same longevity, and it's super easy to remove chains for thorough cleaning when needed.

what's the benefit of quick links? it takes just seconds to pop out and put in new pins for whatever reason (cleaning, for example), so i'm unclear on the practical concept. that is, if you're not inclined to remove chains often. is easy chain removal the main benefit?

had 'em once on a sram red chain years ago when it first came out, but i ditched the sram chain and put on a dura ace so i never got to figure it out.

KMC offers a 10sp chain, model is 10.93, should retail for about $36.
I have a couple in the way to test on my bikes.
Due to a high number of failures on customers bikes using the asymmetric Shimano chains I switched the the KMC X10SL chain and have happy customers.

I've been using SRAM quick-links on Shimano 9-sp chains for years. Quiet, reliable, re-useable over several different chains, what more could you want?

Directional, as mentioned but get a 5700 chain. Not as shiny but works the same, lasts the same, costs less. OR KMC...
