I've got a set of Stan's NO TUBES Alpha 340 rims and wonder if they're compatible with regular clincher tires and, if so, what must be done rim strip-wise. Anyone? Jeff N.

Yeah they are decent rims. You can use stan's yellow tape (go around twice) to seal up the holes like you would normal rim tape if you plan to run tubless. If you plan to use tubes then normal rim tape with work.

I use them on my mtb and cross bike. pretty decent rims.

Yes 100% compatible. Tubeless tires are just clinchers anyway. Have a look at their recommendations:

IDK about the Alpha 340 rims except they are for road and cross but I use Stans rims on my 29r and you have to make sure you don't use some brands and models of tires because they wont fit on the rims.

when I first got them I was concerned about how tire would seat into the rims while inflating...or if they would at all. And they just seem to pop in fine.

Stan's yellow tape works best.

I use the 340's with tubes and conti's. They don't like to seat on their own. I use the old soap suds trick to get them to seat.

the red plastic stretching ones from Specialized. I am pretty sure the fit of the strips was tight edge to edge and had to be installed carefully.

If you don't use the soapy suds, just don't inflate the tire all of the way at first. You can help the bead seat with your hands just rolling the tire side to side.

Very easy, then inflate to desired pressure.

and even with some wimpy minipump i had no issue out on the road fixing THAT flat. maybe veloplugs would be good here.

Very easy, then inflate to desired pressure.Cut a milk carton in half, squirted a little Dawn dish soap in, filled with water, and rolled the wheel/tire/tube in the solution, then filled 'er up. Popped right in place, no problem! Man, I'll tell ya....what would I do without all you beautiful maniacs? Thanks!!! Jeff n.

Fairwheel did a rim review, Stans included in the review.

Yep, it's important to know whether you have version 1(poor rim, IMHO) and version 2..

There have been many reports of tires blowing off Stan's Alpha 340 rims, and that some brands/models of tires are more likely to do this than others.

Looking at the rim profile in the Fairwheel Bikes rim round up and comparing them to the ERTRO rim specs, it seems obvious why this rim has some tire retention issues.

Alpha 340 rim:

http://fairwheelbikes.com/cycling-blog/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/Stans-340-150x150.jpg

ERTRO standard:

http://i522.photobucket.com/albums/w345/BobDopolina/ETRTOClincherrims.jpg

The Alpha 340 rim drawing shows that the difference between the outer and inner widths is only 3mm (20mm - 17mm), or 1.5mm for each sidewall. The size of the actual 'hook' holding the bead is therefore 1.5mm minus the sidewall thickness, or only about 0.5mm. However, ERTRO drawing shows that the 'hook' is supposed to be 1.5mm all by itself - the 'hook' on the Alpha 340 is far too small.

Looking at the other rims in the rim roundup, it can be seen from the difference between the outer and inner widths that they have much deeper 'hooks', more in line with the ERTRO rim standard.

I've been using the newer Stan's NoTubes ZTR Alpha 340 Rim up front, 20 spoke, on a Tune mig 70 hub. I use tubes, have had two different tires on the rim with no problems. I weigh 170 lbs and have chose the Pacenti SL23 Rim, 24 hole for the rear, a stronger rim. The Pacenti look close to the Stan's so should match ok.
