well, my Gore BW jacket has finally bitten the dust, and I'm looking to replace it.

Things I liked:

the GBW shell material. cuts wind perfectly, doesn't heat me up too much. water resistant enough for anything other than a downpour. stretchy enough for good movement.

the under glove "kurt cobain" sleeve extender things

the pockets and vents

the fit, other than the tail. off the bike as well as on. I'm around 6' and just under 200. Body type has been described many times as "not someone you want to get in a fight with." Don't work out other than occasional yoga, just built big. could stand to lose a few pounds off the gut. think my GBW was an XL? maybe a large. can't remember (tags unreadable).

Things I didn't:

the tail length. way too short. elastic at the waist, made it ride up, particularly when commuting in street clothes (vs. in kit). made any water funnel down into my pants.

any suggestions? Assos is out of my price range. Would like to keep it below $250 if possible.

thanks!

Not a bike jacket per se, but I've been using a TNF Apex Bionic this winter and it is perfect. North Face describes it as jacket for aerobic pursuits. I've worn it with varying layers from the 40's to the teens. I got it at 3.5 prices, but I think its around $150.

How long is long. I've got a gently used Assos I can sell you because winters in north TX have become increasingly mild and summers insufferably hot.

I got the trigger from mission workshop earlier this year which I think is pretty snazzy.

You might consider this. Since the pros moved to carbon, the prices on these things have plummeted.

Take a look at the other Gore jackets. Some have longer tails, some have slightly fuller cuts. All are superb.

Lou will make you a fully CUSTOM jacket at a modest price.

Lou is a no brainer if there ever was one.

I second the suggestion for foxwear. Custom jacket, great stuff great price. I have a jacket, a pair of rain pants and a pair of winter cycling pants from Lou.

FYI, I like Lou's stuff. But if you want a cycling specific jacket with certain features you should probably specify those to him. I ended up with two jackets that work reasonably well on the bike, but are cut and fit more for off the bike and running.

On the other hand, he does let you try them on before buying so that's nice.

You might take a look at the Cannondale Metro jacket:

It's a commuter jacket, so it might not be close-fitting and stretchy enough, but the drop tail really drops down low enough to keep your butt dry. A guy at the LBS has one, and recommended it--I see him around town with it all the time.
