Not much for majestic vistas in IL this time of year. My only tie in is a Japanese bike for today's ride. I got a few miles out of the ancient Pirelli tubular that I stuck on the Fiamme last week, so I considered the ride a success. The gravel is perfect right now (watch for ruts though), at least on frozen days.

I've been out the past two days. After last weeks -20 ambient and -50 with windchill the past couple have days have felt like summer. Yesterday was up in the mid 30 with today being in the 20s.

Still nice to get out but nothing to crazy. Half an hour to 45 minutes and stopped at the LBS. Order a group for my Waltworks to gear it up for racing this summer. Now I need another frame to use as my around town single speeder.

How did you get access to Kolekole pass?

bluesea
02-06-2013, 08:10 AM
Didn't. Actually just rode to the Schofield-side gate. There have been bicycle races through Kolekole, including a stage race in the 90's. A beautiful ride it is. I'd like to ride it at least one more time before hanging up my pedals.

Today sounded like the best weather of the week, so I went out for a couple of hours. I thought I might ride gravel when I left. Only about 30, but there was enough sun to thaw the roads. There's a spot down the road in the third pic (standing water) that was barely passable on the bike. Anything with much southern exposure was really soft and wet, so I ended up back on the pavement.

I did a grueling ride this past Saturday with a group of cyclists that called themselve Punggol/SengKang RRR (Relatively Relaxed Riders). We went across the border from Singapore to Malaysia and climbed up a mountain called Gunung Pulai. It was steep as hell, you can take a look at the profile on Strava:
http://www.strava.com/activities/41053435

It shot right up to the sky (literally) at the 85 km mark. It's a 4.3km ascent from 0 to 566m, with Cat 2 climbs in some segments, gradient ranging from 7% to well beyond 20%++. I am so glad I still got my bailout gear at 34-34 (53-34 front; 11-34 rear) whereas my pals who lived and rode in the flatlands all their lives had a rude awakening when they hit their limit at 39-25. It was pure enterPAINment, all of us got off our bikes and walked at some point, all that walking wore out more than one pair of cleats. At around the 3km mark, I hit a patch of fallen leaves and lost my traction, it happened at the steepest section of the climb. I walked about 200 meters and then hopped back on my bike and rode all the way to the top. At the summit, there were three communication towers manned by guards with rifles, we were not allowed to proceed beyond the gates. We met a local guide who took us around to the back and we still managed to snap a couple of pictures before starting the descent back down. It started to drizzle just as we were coming down and one of the riders lost control midway trying to avoid a group of walkers and two motorcyclists coming towards him and he fell and slided like 20 meters before coming to a halt. Fortunately, he didn't break any bones which is a miracle in itself, and still managed to ride the whole way back with us which is another 80 km. Many of the guys have Garmin, and it keeps prompting, "If possible make a U-Turn" (I didn't make this up).
All in all it was a pretty good ride, albeit a very eventful one. I felt uncharacteristically strong that day from start to finish, 169 km total, I wonder if the two tablets of ibuprofen had anything to do with it. ; )
One of the ride organizers popped the question on facebook after we got back: "Will you climb Gunung Pulai again?"
To that, I promptly responded in six different languages:
一次就夠了! Setelah cukup 一回で十分です n Μόλις είναι αρκετά 한 번이면 충분는 once is enough!

Taken at the foot of the climb, right before we start, people looking to their left, making sure that incoming traffic doesn’t mow us down

Rapha Gentlemen's Race went through here and the sign still intact on the road

Happier times mid-way down the descent where I took a dip at a nearby waterfall/spring before the rest of the group caught up and before terror struck later when my friend Freddy fell and drew blood. Yeah, he can still smile.

Lastly, my friend Willy giving me a thumbs-up upon reaching the summit. He confessed later that he hopped back on the bike right before the last bend, just in time for this kodak moment, which he promptly made into his FB profile photo. : )

With my wife in India
And the dobegirl nursing an injury
I scraped into the finish of today's ride
In a crevice that had been covered
By a thin layer of snow
And was feeling pretty small about my riding
...but also wondering if the jones spaceframe
Might have been the answer:
Fat front to float over the crevice
And studded mountain rear for ice traction action...

Got a ride I've always wanted to do
Connecting the main body of water
With the chain of lakes that parallels
It's boarder And actually came across a lake
I didn't know existed after 17 years
Of paddling and pedaling every mile
In a hundred mile radius!
Also had a chance to chase off a gaggle of geese
And get a drink at the open water hole!

About 6 inches of dry powder over very slick icy patches make for interesting moments. Learned three things...

The feeling of a fat bike fishtailing is troubling.
Fatbikes fishtail from the front first.
Controling a slide on a fatbike is most often not successful.

One minor bruise and lots of fun.

even if the footing is not...
...i think we should get some huge zip ties
