I've found a bunch of stuff riding, it helps always being in the small ring. Today I found a Leatherman Wave multitool, best find yet, apart from the bag of some sort of herb and the Toonie that I thought was a carnie token.

I'm not sure it will be as usefull as the 'Cooltool' I found a while back, but cettainly worth turnig around for.

What's the best thing you've found while riding that you could take home. Chicka's don't count. :)

Lotsa bike bottles. We're on an Ironman route for a good part of many local rides, and those tri folks... guess they aren't aware that those bottles are not single use only.

Zmud... I'm sure the 'herb' was immediately turned in to the local authorities. ;)

A lot of the same, but no porn. I often leave it because I don't want to lug it. I did stop last fall for a reusable shopping bag that was sailing across the field at my wheel. It's now being used to haul stuff to bike events.

An iphone (returned to the owner), contents of a wallet (also returned to owner), CD case full of CDs...nice Fossil watch, lots of random tools. A good bit of chain (for pulling stuff) that I had to go back later with the car to fetch...several pairs of work gloves. Random unopened cans and bottles of Mt Dew...

My list is long; I love checking out the sides of the road.

A few of my top finds:
Money: Plenty but a benjamin was the largest single denomination. I rode home with a lot of spring in my spin.

Tools: Chainbreaker turned out a friend would need it on this ride, so I gave it to him; I always carry one anyway. Eastwing 24oz framing hammer, awkward ride home, but what a nice hammer. Plenty of other tools but those stick out the most in my memory.

Misc: Found my own cable lock, after a day spent on high alert moving my bike from line of sight to line of sight. It was on the side of the road about 3/4 of a mile from home. Lots of single gloves, but mismatched work gloves never hurt anyone.

Some cool finds out there!

Dead stuff mostly. Skunk, possum, a deer or two. Did happen to come across a Mercedes Benz convertible last month, blocking my path uphill. Thought, "What an a-hole," even as I saw the a-hole was John Rzeznik with the Goo-Goo Dolls. He'd parked his car with blinkers on to ward off oncoming traffic. Reason: a sleeping bobcat in the middle of the road.

Crazy stuff on the road near our cabin in Ely, MN.

We were on a fall ride and came upon a rifle in its gun case lying on the side of the road.

A Remington .30 06 with 9x Redfield scope.

Owner's name on the case, so I returned it.

Guy was a total jerk.

Here's a pic of a Remington for reference, but not the actual rifle.

I've found so many tools that now I don't even stop if I can't read Snap-On or Craftsman stamped on it as I roll by. I once found three Eastwing hammers in one week worth of riding...I lived in a developing suburb at the time. The weirdest thing I found was a huge tarantula spider on the bike path in San Diego. Just off the path was the aquarium, that apparently was dumped there, with his former cell mate who was dead.

Money. I add the money I find to our annual donations to various charities.

The cutest find, The Dog from McDonalds. Little stuffed toy. Before I departed from the scene I looked around for a minivan with a wailing child. Saw no one so it sits in the office.

Most recent was a tiny baby snapping turtle.
He was definitely going to get squashed so I carried him about a mile up our hill and put hm down near the beaver pond.

Used to be lots of porn, but the Internet has killed it.

I posted this the last time this thread came around, but worth mentioning again. I was rolling over some train tracks in Worcester, MA once and I saw a steak-sized object neatly bundled up in canvas. Hoping it was a wad of drug-dealer money, I hopped off my bike and unraveled it. How much money was it?!? It was actually, what I believe to be a cow tongue, not fresh, and really disgusting. Severed at the base, cut down the side and then stitched up... and maggots pouring out of the incision. I nearly threw up. I didn't bother to call the police... as I had zero interest in spending any more time with this little treasure. My best guess is that it was some sort of voodoo thing... or otherworldly meal plan, but eFF if I know. Worcester is a weird place.

clear cycling glasses
Snap-on 6"x3/8" extension
Jannd top tube bag on the train tracks
numerous sockets
new pair of Smart Wool hiking socks

My standard oneupsmanship answer would be:

Yeah, I once found a 30 drawer Snap-on roller cabinet stuffed full of Snap-on tools. It was so heavy I just had to leave it on the side of the road.

I found a Craftsman Philips head screwdriver that's now my go-to driver. That was 5 or so years ago. I don't find too much on the road. I need to look closer. I mostly see beer cans and fast food detritus.

I once found a monster snapping turtle in the middle of the road at night. I stopped, extended my frame pump all the way and tried to poke it so it would crawl off of the road. It just stayed put. It didn't even move. I rode by a couple of hours later and it was gone.

I also found a box turtle that got clipped once. I picked it up and put in a safe spot off of the road.

A cell phone, battery, and case back cover - in three parts in a busy intersection. Reassembled to form a working phone. Returned to owner, who assured me her life was simply impossible without it. Rewarded with a $50 gift card to a local burrito joint.

Two Benjamins, near the trash at Peet's Coffee in Wellesley. Only in Wellesley.

OK, it wasn't me who found the cash, but I was there.

Way too many contractor-flavor beer cans to pick up and carry home & recycle in a dozen rides, much less one ride.

Biggest finds were a large gold ring, gold link necklace that had been chewed up a bit by car traffic, but I found the links over a 10 foot stretch--sold for almost $300. A handgun, which I turned into a policeman who was parked a couple of miles away. I gave him my name and telephone number and told him that if it was claimed or connected to a crime, to let me know. Never heard from him. A 15" crescent wrench, which was a hoot to see me carrying home in the back pocket of my jersey.

In Florida, the police want you to notify them about found wallets as often they are the result of a crime. I've found a bunch. One was a teen with his telephone number, so I called him. He brought his hot girlfriend with him to pick it up, along with the $200+ in the wallet! I think he was ready to offer her to me as a finders fee!!

My worthy list: Like new Camelbak Podium Chill, Windvest in my size (XL), about 10 pro waterbottles (as opposed to amateur water bottles I guess) when the ToC passed through, a butterfly knife, a nice 700c front clincher wheel with tire all aired up (took to police lost and found after an interesting ride home) and a turtle family crossing the road. Was not on a bike but found a kitten under a tree on a Christmas Eve run. This being Alaska, I thought he was a goner. Ran home with him in my coat, put him in the garage with a hot water bottle and a blanket to see if he would revive. (Our cats don't like company). Half an hour later I came out to find he had sprung to life, ripped our trash open and was eating the carcass of our Christmas duck! We found a good home for him and occasionally hear of his adventures on facebook!

I once rode my touring rig on I90 over Snoqualmie Pass (it sucked btw). My buddy and I noticed that the quality of beer litter was directly proportional to altitude. There was Sam Adams before we started the climb, Heineken mid-way up, and a lot of Keystone close to the top. We also noted that there was a bullwhip just past North Bend...and a nice-looking set of lingerie shortly thereafter. Had the rest of the climb to dream up a narrative for those two items.

Riding from Minturn (outside Vail, Colorado) to Leadville on a hot summer day I was dumb enough NOT to bring arm warmers, knee warmers or a rain jacket. As we say in Colorado, if you think the weather looks good, just wait 5 minutes... 3 miles from Leadville the sky turned dark grey and the T° dropped 10°. As rain drops started to fall I noticed some clothes piled by the road side. Men's brown dress shoes, dress socks and a Sugoi XL woman's winter long-sleeve jersey folded neatly. NO ONE was around so I took it as a sign and put it on. It helped me finish the 70 miles ride in comfort!

I also find lots of beach towels in the summer, perfectly good towels that need to washed, and sandals. When I ride my unpaceline like heavy bastard bike with milk crate I get to take all this free stuff home.

I also discover all sorts of big things that require a truck to fetch that I otherwise wouldn't know about. and then there is the occasional porno but thats been awhile since the take off of the internet age.

Don't even get me started on the bungee chords, I had a couple years of riding where I collected so many that I just stopped stopping for them.

Technically, we were riding off-road and ran into two turkey hunters (one clearly pretty green to the sport). Full camo, head to toe. The experienced one was carrying a big male turkey over his shoulder. This was late spring and my buddy and I were pretty surprised to run into them. They chatted for a while and we headed deeper into the woods and they were clearly walking out to the trail head. When we hit the trail head later, there was a shotgun laying on the ground with what was clearly a fresh dent in the site rail. Looked to be the newbie's gun and he leaned it against the front of the vehicle when they were loading up and forgot it when they drove away. At least it was not loaded, i could have imagined it going off as they backed up and shooting up the front the vehicle. We called the police who took descriptions (guys looked like Johnny Bravo, no as bright). A week later the detective in charge of evidence called for more details, they never called the police.

If anybody in the rockland county ny area happened to find an arundel saddle bag a few weeks ago, it was lost off my buddy's bike after a double flat ride...

My best find was a friend's wallet at a Harry's BBQ (now closed) in Willow City, TX. I knew that he was about 20 minutes ahead of me so I took the wallet and killed myself to catch up to him. I chatted for a few minutes and then continued on. Once I was far enough ahead to be out of sight around a corner, I pulled his wallet out of my jersey and dropped it in the middle of the road. He was definitely surprised to come around the corner and find his own wallet in the road!

Worst first. Every night that I rode along this paved trail above the Mississippi I needed to keep and eye out for a rather daring young of the year deer. Tonight I found it dead along the short section of trail encounters always happened on. It appeared to be almost a week old carcass and I didn't stop to see if signs of being hit by a vehicle still existed or if someone on a bike tangled with it.

Not best but most interesting recent find was this. Shouldn't have stopped.

I'm on vacation in Maui and yesterday I found an AT&T iPhone 5S that is locked. It had very little charge left so I bought a 30 to 8 pin charger adapter so I could charge it up and am waiting for someone to call it so it can be returned to its owner. I tried calling Apple with the 14 digit number engraved on the back, they said they couldn't do anything and I should bring it to a police station. If no one calls by the time I leave I guess I'll do that.

Other times I have found brand new cheap paint brushes, a craftsman 13 mm combination wrench, pliers, someone else's flip cell phone that I was able to return, money and once in a while I've seen something that I came back with my car to pick up, a camp trunk and dell computer flatscreen monitor that people were throwing away come to mind.

A new trend in garbage that people are tossing from their cars seems to be those dental floss picks. I have seen them on the road in NJ, NY, PA, CT, CA and HI, and when I ride in some more states I expect to see them there too!
