Classic Box Section Rim Recommendation

I have had it!!! On my Baylis I have been riding on some Torelli Master hoops laced to Paul HF hubs the last 7 or so years. Built by our very own Old Potato and they still run true. But, these damn rims are notoriuosly difficult to peel tires on. I am done with them after my second pinch flat while mounting new tires! I had resorted to riding a tire like the ruffy tuffy because I was paranoid about getting a flat on the road. They are tough but I want to try some better rubber.

I am lookng for a classic rim, silver or polished that won't be as difficult to mount a tire on as these stupid rims.

If you want lightweight there's the Kinlin XR19W.

If you want old school polished there's the Velo Orange PBP.

Or the boring-but-it-works Mavic Open Pro.

In the absolute box section rim category there is the Pacenti PL23.

There are certainly more, I'll let the others chime in :)

My Open Pros are really easy for mounting tires with no tools.

That's about the only true box-section I know of being made these days, but I haven't used em either.

Alternatively, keep your eyes on ebay or CL and find some MA2s (silver) or MA40s (anodized). If you don't mind grey ano, there's a few pairs of NOS Sun Mistrals floating around ebay at the moment.

I'm searching for a 32h box-section Mistral with a 'for racing only' sticker on it so I keep an eye on ebay for em.

Oh, data point: the Campy Omega XL clincher wheelset I sold a buddy needs a tire jack to get tires on those rims too.

Mr. Pacenti has been kicking out some fabulous rims, I built a set of his TL28s and they've been great.

He makes a box section rim too, 23mm wide, which should add some suppleness to your ride too.

I've built up the PL23 and really like that rim. It definitely scores in the classic, box section category. The quality is high and it's relatively light to boot.

I had a tough time mounting wire bead Gatorskins / Campy rims on my commuter. Flats were dreaded until I started carrying one of these. Problem solved.

On my daily rider, I have some 32 hole classic Campagnolo box rims. No unusual problems with tire mounting, and they stay true. See them new occasionally on E bay.

Open Pros here. Easy to mount most tires on. Solid rims, decent weight, looks are not as "classic" as an old school box section but they don't look out of place on most classic style bikes.

I am digging the TB14's. Paging Old Potato! I think anything has to be better than mounting tires on Torelli Master rims. IIRC, there was a batch that had some sort of flaw where the diameter was off 1-2mm or something.

When I tired to mount Challenge P/R on them, that was impossible...

What about the CR-18.....they've got a "classic" look, no problems with tire installs(in my experience), cheap, and near as my touring/commuting bike can tell tough and reliable.

Sorry, those made by Ambrosio after a pile that were too small and the tires came off.

I have DT 415, 465, 440(rear OC), all in silver. H+Son TB-14-polished.
