Bud's Bike Shop on 1st St in the Claremont village area used to be the go to pro shop back in the day, but not sure if they were bought by one of the big LA franchises and Trek-icized. There is also Competitive Edge in Upland.

Wow, blast from the past. I haven't been to Bud's since college 30 years ago. I hope they are still there.

Corey at Coates Cyclery on Foothill in Pomona...good people.

Buds in Claremont was bought out by Jax quite a few years back (10?).

I haven't been back since I used to race for the Claremont Colleges club team in '92-'95, but even back then Bud's wasn't what I would have called "beginner-friendly". They were a higher-end shop, knew it, and liked it that way. Good guys, but not where I'd send a newbie on his own. Back then, [1] I'd have gone with you, or [2] recommended Coates up on Foothill.

Coates, of course, has the added benefit that you can go hit Senor Baja's for fish tacos while you're in the neighborhood...
