I currently have a standard clear plastic chainstay protector on my C50 and it's time to be replaced. The plastic has yellowed and the adhesive has oozed out from underneath.

I have two questions:

Can I safely use Goo Gone to remove the adhesive? I believe I used it last time I replaced the protector and it may have dulled the clear coat due to my aggressive rubbing. I asked a friend earlier today and he recommended WD-40 instead.

Also, any recommendations for a protector that will handle the diamond chainstay on the Colnago? I have a bubble/ripple there currently.

Thanks in advance.

I have never had a problem with Goo Gone but I have dulled some finishes by rubbing too aggressively with a coarse rag.

I just did this using rubbing alcohol. That what is used for removing & installing clearbra paint protection film & is safe for clearcoat.

Rubbing alcohol works for me. I read recently on Paceline or another forum about using 3M or similar automotive clear wrap to protect the frame / chainstay. I haven't tried it yet but sounds interesting.

Bicycle tube, wrapped like bar tape around the stay.

Not pretty, but it does its job with no fuss, and certainly no bubbles.

Any advice for putting (back) on a chainstay protector? It's aluminum the cp not the frame, if that's relevant.

Doubled sided tape? .... to catch flies?...... seems strange to me or do you mean use it to hold a protector on?

On my mtb I use insulated electrical tape, called mastic tape. It doesn't start craking like a rubber tubes do over time.

Google 3M 2228. Comes in 1" (available at home depot) or 2" (online or industrial supply only).

I am currently using an automotive clear bra product. Must have at least a thousand miles, still looks new and edges have stayed down. I do not recall the exact brand, but should be available at auto supply stores.

If you read the post to which I replied, you'd see that he's attempting to reattach an aluminum chainstay protector.

To get any of these off, try mineral spirits plus a piece of dental floss. Pull the dental floss back and forth under the edge of the protector, brushing the area with mineral spirits. It's the standard method for removing body films at body shops. No damage on practically any finish.
