View Full Version : Chris King R45 or Campy Record?

I realize this is a bit like choosing between which supermodel you prefer. There's really no wrong answer.

I picked up a set of the Ambrosio Nemesis rims on the CC blowout, and am now torn on what to build them up with. I have iterations of both sets of hubs and love both about as equally as you can. King's are more expensive, but all the color options are tantalizing after my first foray was black. The Record hubs are cheaper and bulletproof, but come in any color you want as long as its black.

First world problems I know. Thoughts?

King hubs are great but take forever to break in. Campy's just work...for a long time. What spokes are you using?

Sapim. Either the CX-Ray or the Laser most likely.

buy a set of silver ones off eBay. the 10 speed will hold an 11 spd cassette and they look better. or get a set of hubs from the bike hub store that are silver. they'll be asian made, be much cheaper and look really cool. i have a set, no problems.

Campy, Campy, Campy. did I mention Campy?

if you want hubs that you attach a cassette to and ride without ever thinking about them, get Campy.

if you want cute hubs that need to be tightened 48 times while they "break in" get CK.

I guess what I'm suggesting is get the Campagnolo hubs.

I love the R45s I have on my bike. Not sure about a break in period - they've ridden great from the start. How about a pair of Royce hubs? I believe they only come in silver, but they have a great old school look to them.

Go for something wild. I like Mango from CK.

the R45's are cooler, no doubt. i think though, that a classic rimset like the Nemesis really would look best with silver hubs.

i'll just throw it out there, if you're on a budget, and want pretty darned nice silver hubs, dont overlook velocity. inexpensive, and made very well, IMO.

It's gonna be a heavy wheelset so go Campy. I reserve R45s for racing or climbing wheelsets. YMMV

I know it's not one of the choices, but I'd go silver White Industries - H2/H3 or the new T11 (they're basically the same). For heavy-duty and/or big-guy use (that's me!) I like the larger drive side flange on the WI hubs when you have a symmetrical rim like the Nemesis. It just makes sense with a high dish wheel. Only downside to the WI hubs is that the bearing pre-load system seems a little funky to me, but when you're dealing with sealed drop-in bearings I guess it's not such a big deal.

BTW, I've got a set of silver WI/36H Nemesis wheels and they've been rock solid for about 1500 miles so far. And I couldn't resist picking up a pair of 32H rims from CC either.

I know this wasn't the question.

Do certain hubs suite certain rims better? Like open pro, velocity rims to record, WI, CK etc

Flash - I got a pair of the hoops from CC as well. I am pulling some black record hubs from a clincher wheelset that I have (and never use) and having them laced to the Nemesis rims with CX-rays (black). Really looking forward to the ride.

I will say that I had some gold r45 hubs laced to Nemesis rims with some green sided FMB's and boy did that wheel set look killer. I wasn't so sure about gold hubs but once i got them they looked awesome. Either way you decide, like you said, first world problems.

I have both Campy silver and black to Nemesis rims. Both look good (silver spokes and brass nipples). Now if I could get a set of the new purple Chris King with Nemesis rims, I will be in heaven...

With the recent Nemesis deal i am sure a lot of folks will be making this decision.
I opted for the R45s - silver.

Are you running Campy 11spd on the bikehubstore hub? My RD ticks against the spokes. Brandon sent me a couple of more axle washers which allowed me to move the freehub slightly away from the shell and thus have enough clearance (barely!)

This isn't a problem with these same hubs running Shimano for me, just the 11sp Campy.

Awesome looking machine.

Thanks Matt. Unfortunately, I had a bad crash on that thing in December of 2011. So it was retired. But it was and it my favorite SV paint scheme ever.

I went with the campy records in black. Just right with the nemesis

I love the r45 hubs but generally use them when I need a spoke count lower than 32h.
velomine had the black hubs for 279.
Makes for a nice reasonably light wheelset

Do the R45s have that Chris King buzz saw sound to them? That racket is reason enough to give them a try. Otherwise I'd stick with Campy.

Record. Recognizing black and 32h only, far easier to service, last forever, cheaper.

Unless really light rider, I would recommend Sapim Race or DT Comps drive side rear.

What about a heavy rider who puts out pathetic wattage?

Because that's totally me.

No such thing as a free lunch. Thin spokes, particularly on the drive side rear, don't support the rim as well as 14/15 spokes. Trying to save a paltry few grams and have a less reliable wheel, don make sense to me. PLUS DT Comps or Race are cheaper.

If you are a 'heavy' rider, then DT Comp or Race rear, 3 cross, brass nipps. Laser or DT Revs front would be OK, 3 cross, brass nipps. I'm .1 offa ton and have Revolutions on a few of my front wheels BUT I can tell they aren't as stiff as using Comps. Same Campagnolo tubie rims.

I've had three sets of R45's and they are less buzzzzzy than the King Classic hubs. the bees are still there though.

Hardly. Then again, I've never gotten the appeal. In my mind there have always been better headsets and hubs on the market for less money (and still US made)

Whichever you can get in silver. Then build it up with silver spokes and silver nipples.
