I happen to be one of those people who find the "old school" look of curved tubes appealing to my aesthetic sensibilities. The Hunter CX in the custom area...
http://forums.thepaceline.net/showthread.php?p=1280829#post1280829

...the Trek Sawyer (http://www.rotoruasinglespeed.com/gallery/288kp28.jpg), and the Retrotec Cycles (http://www.ingliscycles.com/) line from Inglas to name a few. Other than the fact that it's more work to bend the tubes, my guess is is just an aesthetic choice for the builder and end user. How do you feel about curved tubed frames? Any of our member builders care to chime in on working with straight vs curved tubes?

They look cool but an MTB with a top tube that curves up in an arch is not a good a idea if you are a man.

The seat stays look a little out of proportion, but an interesting bike.

Humble's Sextant uses curved seatstays. The builder's made some comments about how it makes for a nice look plus easily allows him to build plenty of tire clearance.

Hey that's my Hunter. You asked for a ride report, and all I can say is, "smooooooooth." The bike replaced my aluminum Giant for cross, and while its a little heavier—due to the brakes mostly—the bike is a knife. I asked for a tight wheelbase race geo with his ultra light tubing set and that's what I got. It turns, it handles, it stops, and it does it all with little rider fatigue. I feel faster, and more confident, regardless of whether or not the "faster" part is true. I want an identical one with cantis and standard head tube now.

I got the curved tube because I just didn't think I could order a bike from Santa Cruz and Hunter without it. It seems so "Signature" to me.

I'm off to get fitted in a few weeks at Whole Athlete and I'll put the results or changes in the photo thread then.

Like them if the curves are gradual and blend into the design. And particularly if the curves are both for aesthetics and also serve a function.

Don't get me wrong, I think there are many sexy bikes out there with straight tubes. That said, when I look at a bike the biggest shapes present are the circular lines of the wheels. When the tubes are curved they tend to soften the overall appearance of the bike as a whole and make the lines more flowing as opposed to the straight lines of a standard frame. It's just an aesthetic feel that I like. If there is no real weight penalty and the handling is on then it's a win/win in my book.

I do dig the ride and look of my Sawyer I picked up from JR. If one comes along it's worth a go.

Which, in contrast to this thread theme, is something about the bike I don't like. I guess I'm just a traditionalist, but a normal rear triangle just looks right to me

The Blackbuck sure does handle well, though.

thanks, I'm really happy with the handling of the bike. The front end geometry is very close to a Haro Mary, steeper 72d HTA and 51mm rake Fox F29 fork so it's quick in the single track and still smooth on fast fire roads. It's all filet brazed and has rear rack mounts. The tubing is on the lighter side so it's very smooth in the rough stuff for a hardtail. I really prefer steel hardtail 29ers to any other MTB.

My dad was with Schwinn for thirty years in the 50s, 60s, and 70s, and I've always been particularly fond of both the aesthetics and the engineering of the late thirties cantilever frame models.

The frames were electro-forged (flash-welded) straight gauge 1010 tubing and heavy as hell, but there's a graceful sweep to them that's still attractive 75 years after they first hit the showrooms.

From an engineering standpoint, the twin tubes that are welded to the down tube just aft of the head tube, sweep back in a graceful arc to welds at the top of the seat tube, and continue as seat stays to the rear dropouts function to keep the head tube and seat tube in the same plane; any lateral forces trying to twist the HT and ST out of plane are counteracted by the twin tubes, one in compression while the other is in tension. Frank W. Schwinn was the inventor, and the design was copied by other manufacturers when the patent expired in the mid-fifties.

A late thirties Schwinn ad:

Volagi Viaje and Liscio seem to sell well and have received at least some positive critical acclaim. I have liked mine so far and think it has love/hate looks.

Years ago Aegis had a contest to name their new top-of-the-line road frame which was going to supplant the "Aro Svelte" below.
I wanted to win that contest, but I did not and cannot remember the model name which was selected.
Then Aegis went o-o-b some years later I think, and now I often see unpainted (and bondo-packed at every joint) Aegis frames for sale on eBay, at very excessive prices.
It is a bit disconcerting, to see the stark reality under the glowing mascara.

Since this has been brought back to life.

I just finished this one up about a week ago, still no test ride. Mid 90s KHS I stripped down to the frame and then rebuilt with Dura Ace 7400 parts.

Then there's this beast of a bike. My fairly new Dutch bike that I got for it's all around practical use.

Somehow I was smitten by the look of another lower-tier bike that was in need of some TLC.

I ended up with this, it handles real off-roading now (with it's much-fatter new tires) and doesn't perform great but the minimalist front suspension is at times very much appreciated. Mainly though, it's a bike that I can lock up, walk away from, and not have to worry about!
