I was looking through the Graham Watson LA Tribute (http://grahamwatson.com/2005/lance/coverpage.html) and ran across this picture of Jan and Lance together. This was right before Lance was diagnosed with cancer, so it was sometime in 1996. But what caught my eye, was not Lance -- but rather how lean Jan was back then!!!

I thought this picture was equally surprising. It looks like Jan and Lance just changed bodies between then and now.

My thoughts exactly! Lance trimmed down (albeit in part because of the cancer and subsequent treatments) and Jan bulked up. I know a lot of people give Jan a hard time about his weight, but he picked up quite a bit of upper body muscle mass since the picture above.

Looks like Jan went to the Tyler Hamilton school of weight-training! If he was a chicken you'd send him back to the shed.

jan is still lean (in july)

merckx said in '97 that he would struggle as he got older because he'd gain muscle mass

once again: eddy is always right

1997...
I like the look this chick is giving Jan....it looks like she is expecting more than just the shirt to come off....

to me, Lance looked bigger in the last couple of tours as compared to 99. maybe he was morphing back to his days at 170 lbs

fodo would wager that lance has been fighting his body a bit the last few years, trying to keep that muscle from coming back....

only someone who knows exactly what he's weighed in January and July the last three years knows for certain, but he has looked progressively more muscular...the doof would not be surprised to see him regain that mass in retirement...chemo does not lead to permanent muscle mass loss...incredibly disciplined diet control does...but you can only fight your body for so long....

I think Jan gets too much grief for being always "tubby". It's not the case.
OK, in 2002 he was heavy in the spring, but that's almost the exception, not the rule.
Google search images of him, and 99% of the time he's looking lean and mean.
His health check at the 05 tour wasn't too far off '97.

Is it just me or do they *both* look happier in the earlier pics? Sure, they're young and foolish and happy...but...

why do some of the pics show up as "attached images" in the box, and others are not in the box?

Paul Sherwen may talk about Jan Ullrich hauling his "huge muscular carcass" up the climbs, but look at him off his bike, and he's not so huge. He's just big compared to the riders around him. Cipollini and Indurain looked very big on their bikes, but Indurain was actually about 6'2" and 170 lbs when he was winning the Tour. Hardly a rugby player's physique.

its a good rule of thumb to add 10-20 pounds (depending on what their skeletal frame is like) to the weight of a cyclist to get an idea of what their "natural" (cyclists develop deliberately unbalanced bodies) athletic weight would be.

Jan would probably be a lean and muscular 185-190 if he were a rugby or soccer player, for example...Boonen and would probably be around 200 (think Cal Ripken)...

Indurain was winning the Tour at 173-75...balance out his upper body and he's 195...a big guy for six two and a half...

why do some of the pics show up as "attached images" in the box, and others are not in the box?Because some images are actual attachments and have the box around them, but the others are linked images that exist someplace on the web.

i thought that when i saw the post on g watson's book a few days back. lance seemed to have a real joy about him back in the days before he was rich and famous.

of course that could all come down to photo editing, but i haven't seen that cheeky grin and smile for ages. maybe celebrity is hard work. maybe he has something weighing on his mind, maybe...

Everyone is talking up Basso for next years tour and dismissing Jan and I believe that's a mistake. He was only a tiny percentage of time behind Lance and Ivan this year and those guys teams were working for them.Vino plainly had his own agenda and was putting himself in the shop window.Jan has to stay out of trouble in the lead up and if his team really works hard for him (T mobile have signed some quality riders ) i think he'll show us some real quality.

how do you insert the linked image then. thanks in advance for the help. You can do this one of two ways:
- just click on the http://forums.thepaceline.net/images/editor/insertimage.gif when editing the message and this will pop up a window to input the URL of the image
- you can also do this by hand by using the key words "img" around your URL like this {img}url goes here{/img} -- except you replace the "{}" with "[]"
