View Full Version : What color is this?

So, I'm not much of an artist... but I like this color. To me, it is red, but with a lot of orange in there. The official name is "dragon red". Maybe it is just the way the light is hitting it, but I think it looks really nice.

It's all subjective... but to me, the springs on the front shock are 'red', the paint on the body has something else.

Dragon Red to me :). When I was trying to choose a color for my Curtlo, I just about wore out google images trying to find the right orange. The powder company that makes Brentwood Orange will actually send out samples of their powder colors applied to small foil chips. Not until I asked Bob Ross what color his bike was did I get close. Unfortunately, he did not know the color. But Spectrum, the painter, was happy to let me know what color and what vendor.

Just about the only way to get close to knowing is to see it applied as the net don't do it so good.

Does this look like that?

Come on, we're just teasing. Don't act all hurt.

Fact of the matter is that it's basically impossible to reproduce colors on the web. If you really want to get close, take a PPG book to a Vespa dealership and keep flipping until you get a close match.

Ha! As if I know where a Vespa dealer is....

Yeah, the color variance is a bit scary when I send off my ideas to Joe Bell. I hope his monitor is calibrated similar to mine!

Later tonight, I'm going to change the image in my post to a green scooter and really mess with people who find this thread in the future.

Matt, I hope this might help a bit as I know color is difficult for most people.

If you're really serious about painting a bike and especially a custom that you've not only spent a chunk of dough on but had to wait a while to get you'll do the smart thing and not use a color that had to either define or even name on an object that you can't see in person aka "live" and you certainly wouldn't pick a color or even think about liking a color by what it looks like on your monitor.

There are two very easy and safe ways to find "your" color. One, find an object you can hold in your hand so you know exactly what it looks like then send said object to the painter and have them do a color match. Works every time for me.
Secondly and perhaps the easiest, find a car in a color you love, find the exact model, exact year and instantly you and the painter have the color code and you're good to go.
one other way is using nail polish of which there are 100s of colors and some really nice ones. Buy some, experiment painting a small piece of metal with colors and when you hit the right one just let it dry and send to your painter.

Otherwise you could be headed for disaster if you don't have a good "color" sense.

Hope this helps bud.

Here's some example of what I've done in the past to nail my color(s):

I had our tandem painted using the car paint idea. This color came from a 2012 Jeep and it's called "orange crush". We saw the car, loved the color and got exactly what we expected, no bad surprises.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v66/KRhea/Tandems/DSCF9663.jpg

I used this toy diecast car for a paint job a couple years when I couldn't anything else that matched what I was after, It was matched perfectly. I can't find the pic of the frame but I can tell you this, the match was so spot on the car almost disappeared when placed near the frame they did such a great job of color matching.

I also used this purple car for a frame paint scheme and again, it was matched perfectly.

And lastly, here's 5 cars, which one is "really" red...there's no wrong answer, just opinions, likes and dislikes.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v66/KRhea/DSCF1194_zps13ad61fe.jpg

Ok, how 'bout these 3, which one is red...still hard without having them in your hand under your lighting conditions, however, send your fav of the 3 to your painter and boom, ya got it nailed.

Best thing is to go to an automotive paint supply shop or dealer and look at the chips.

However, keep in mind that tubes are round, so that will affect how the light is reflected.

It looks very similar to a color used on 1955 Chevy cars. Gypsy red it was called. It is red, but leaning a bit toward orange. Not quite the tomato color.

Anyway, here is a place with cross reference to find it in several brands of automotive paints. You can click on this link and see a larger color chip.

http://paintref.com/cgi-bin/colorcodedisplay.cgi?manuf=GM&year=1955&page=2&rows=50

If that is the color you are referring to it is close to a red Gunnar uses on some of their frames. Not sure it is the exact color, but I have a red 2009 Gunnar Roadie about this color.

Also just matching the picture you provided, it is close to red-255 green-50 and blue-0 in some software.

I'm with Dave, "tomato" seems to describe that color perfectly

...but if I wasn't with Dave I'd suggest some other vegetable (oh, wait, tomatoes are fruit, right?) like "habanero" or perhaps "bell pepper"

I dunno. It's red.

Likely has some orange in it (or a little yellow pigment, pushing the red along toward orange, but not as far as the mid-point between the two perceptual primaries).

Any photo, much less any photo viewed on some screen, is going to raise the question how closely you can match the pigment you see in the photo with, say, the way something would appear to you in natural light.

So there's some particular paint, or mixture of paints, and maybe somebody has a proprietary name or a RAL number or some such.
