Hey Everyone,

My mtb has these thick clear vinyl strips under the downtube to protect the finish. Much thicker and cleaner looking than packing tape. I'm not sure where the original owner got them. Does anyone here use them and know where you buy them?

Thanks,

Morgan

Helicopter (leading edge) tape:

Has to be polyurethane.

I bought a large roll on Ebay, some 3m clear jazz. Works great on the cross bike!

Yeah, 3M door edge guard from Amazon. comes in many sizes and thicknesses. One roll will last you a lifetime.

The way that I ride, I should put this stuff on all the leading edges of my bike... especially the fork blades ;)

That stuff seems very hardcore.... as in, if you ever want to take it off, will it come off?

I'd take a roll if you want to order two.

I went down to my local tint shop and they gave me some 3M scraps which should last me a while. I usually put them on the underside of the down tube, seat tube and chain stay.

I went to my local ski shop and picked up some for free.
Works great.
I,of course, forgot what they called it.
That product from CC is 11.99 for one piece??
Yikes.

3M Xpel film comes in 2 thicknesses and works well. You can get it in sheets or 12" wide rolls. It's adhesive backed, is usually applied like a tint using soapy water and is what is used for clear car bras and headlight protection. As GuyGadois stated it can be bought at your local tint or car paint supply house.

I also use 3M 2228 Mastik tape on my chainstay, it's a bit tougher against chainslap.

If you pulled it off, it would take the paint off with it. The safest way I know of is to use mineral spirits and dental floss. (That's how car dealers remove the model badges for that "stealth look" here in tragically hip L.A.)

What color is the 3M? I couldn't tell.

I can vouch for the fact that helicopter tape can lift paint right off.

Much of that depends on how well the bike's paint has adhered to the material, a function of good prep, curing, etc. etc.

I made mistake of applying some to drive side chainstay on a bike that was almost fresh outta the paint booth. Woops...

I use that helicopter stuff- and have so for a pretty long time- it has never pulled any of the paint off- even on my Indy Fab or so my crappy painted down hill bike.

i like this brand for protective film.

http://crankskins.com/

have used their frame protector on all carbon bikes as well as the crankarms. the stuff really works, and is near invisible.

There are two thickness- I obviously use the thicker for the down tube on my MTB's....I have unreasonable expectations as to how long and how good my paint should be on my MTB's (particular) and I am way impressed. Worth the money if you have no other suitable free options..

3M clear bra can be removed easily without harming paint (provided the paint was in good condition and fully cured to start with). A hair dryer helps. google "clear bra removal" for tips

Its black. Like almost a rubberized foam tape.

I'll second the Crankskin stuff. I use it on my crank arms to protect against shoe rub, works real good!
